Another thing one must understand is that nobody wants to fight a war unless forced to do so. That was Cape Colony, which is the western side of SA.
The Boer Republics in the east were never colonised by the Dutch state, just people who didn't agree with the VOC (Dutch east india company) and left the colony, at that point they kind of separated from us.

We weren’t really much of a Dutch colony. More of a glorified trading post by the Dutch East India Company. The Cape was handed over to the English to prevent it from falling into French hands during the Napoleonic wars. The colony was returned to the Dutch, but Anglos being Anglos, decided that they didn’t want the Dutch to have the Cape back after all and invaded.
