While I'm not sure of the exact source for that one, it's not an unusual subject to come up. Plenty of mangaka get their start by being an assistant to a mangaka, and it's not unusual for them to give a shout out to their former boss at some point, or at least mention their former boss in an interview while talking about where they started.
