Shinto for Japanese is their culture, they maintain it as their country and people. It's a way to maintain nationalism in Japan, but most Japanese just do it out of respect for their past people and culture, they don't strongly literally believe that these deities in Shinto truly are real, it's more of a way to just keep the spirit/culture of japan alive and maintain nationalism.
