Cartridges don't go off either. Primers are fired igniting propellant, which may be reasonably said to be set off.

I use to man a m240 on a humvee. Does sound pretty alike. Even with the slow down for the belt dragging and gas plug getting vibrated. A full auto 5.56 makes more of a pop and sounds more like ripping your pants.
