FKMT thread, Kaiji edition

I started rewatching Kaiji recently and I think I finally am enough of a man to get to the manga. Are there any particular scanlations I should read, to avoid a Band of the Hawk situation?

Also, any other series I should read? I plan on reading Ten and Akagi afterwards, in that order, since the latter was recently finished

Polite bump

Don't know about scanlations I believe FKMTkrazy scanned everything related to Kaiji (maybe I'm wrong)
Other than that you should check out his other major works:Buraiden Gai, Tobaku Haouden Zero and strongest man Kurosawa. There is also gin to kin but it isn't fully translated.

Read strongest man Kurosawa.

Thank you. I've heard about Kurosawa, but what are Buraiden Gai and THZ about?

Gai is about teen delinquent who get locked in some fucked up Youth detention center and how he escapes from there. It's different from his other stories but still cool.
Zero is about games and gambles. His character is a combination of Kaiji and Akagi-he is really smart but still human and fuck up. Really interesting, the second part is vastly different from the first though.
On another note you should also read his collab stories with Kawaguchi Kaiji which are Life and Confession, both are excellent.

Thanks, again. Sounds like I'll have a busy month

Zero is about this really extroverted successful high schooler who got into this shady gambling shit trying to play a hero. People avoid it thinking it's too fanservice but actually the dude has a ton of flaws and both stories are fast paced, which is new, and fun. Gin to Kin is fun as fuck but it looks like the translator ragequit because of some plot twist. Gai is a small story and so it's consistently tragedy/drama without ever stopping being serious and the character development is really linear. Ten is goddamn fun and comfortable to read but it's full mahjong mango. Kurosawa is goofy misunderstandings that snowball into damn huge Dostoevsky mess.

>Gin to Kin is fun as fuck but it looks like the translator ragequit because of some plot twist.

Fantranslations truly were a mistake.

I wanted to create a thread and request raw spoilers/raws themselves from anons but I don't really know if it's the right thing to do because clearly there should be some strong suffering moments and stuff which is better to experience in the scanlated form. God fucking damn it. Funny thing is that muh twist is probably meant to be temporal but but BUT due to the publishing magazine problems the infinite technical hiatus came to be the end of the series well and probably the fact that Kaiji began to be the new not mahjong thing of the author.

Let's hope for the best. Like maybe a Kaiji S3. T-There's a pachinko animation so something can be done, right?

To be quite honest Madhouse is in the shitter since 2011-2012, a lot of nice people quit with the buyout of the studio after some stock war or something, Kon died, Taniuchi still in jail, all that garbage so I don't know anymore. Gimme Ten by Shaft

>Taniuchi still in jail

Still? Fucking hell, wasn't this in 2012? How hard are Japan's drug laws?

I would be kinda afraid of any Shaft adaptation due to how much they like to edit the source material desu. It works well with LN adaptations but I'm not sure FKMT manga would translate as well.

But honestly, as long as it gets better treatment than Berserk 2016/17, I'm down for anything

Let´s not forget that the series´s composer has been in jail for having weed since 2012 and will stay there for at least 2 more years

I think you just did

Akagi was finished?

Washizu Mahjong ended a few months ago, yeah

I wonder if he is going to fuck off to Americas once free. Death Note fame would feed the dude contracts for the rest of his blessed long japanese life.

it's all epilogue chapters till Feb 18.

It's not that easy. Immigration is a huge pain in the ass when you have serious jail time on your record.

The first season was a masterpiece but season 2 had irredeemable pacing issues.

>How hard are Japan's drug laws?

Zero tolerance and then some. You get caught with even a couple of ounces of weed, they treat you like a black guy in Alabama who got caught fucking the judge's daughter.

True, but the dice arc was the pinnacle of both seasons so it's all forgiven in my book

Ten kind of spoils that Akagi survives Akagi story, but it was meant to be a story of his legend.

Well, it's kind of a given that Akagi is a prequel. And even then, I think it's the kind of series where execution matters much more than any actual plotpoints

>the first season
while it was a bit sad they picked later less how to say? cute Kaiji model for the animation for some reason (I get style changes but Fukumoto does draw growing up/old, see Hiroyuki from Ten and Zero), animated Tonegawa was absolutely amazing, all the smirks they added to him, that heel turn when the audience cried about the money, tiny nice director things I missed watching it years ago. And now this nice director Yuzo Sato who directed both Kaiji and Akagi stuck with assorted maho sensou's and capeshit.

...

Hijacking thread.
Is there a translation for Gin to Kin that isn't god awful?

The big money rustlas is decent, but still unfinished. Last time i heard of them they had several chapters scripts translated but still looking for a typesetter

>I plan on reading Ten and Akagi afterwards
Ten will be hard to pick up Mahjong, start with Akagi instead

I already know rules of mahjong though. I have trouble remembering what all the yaku names mean, but I know them.

That's kinda badass.

Hundreds of hours played of Yakuza 2 taught me well

I still have no idea how shogi works though

Kaiji spoilers when?

Most recent ones we have are 253.

What's a Band of the Hawk situation?

mercenary band in berserk translated as band of the hawk, later turns out to have been band of the falcon when a city is named "falconia"

254 must come out today.

I meant the translation group more than anything else. If thhe fucking author says the main character's name is "Guts" but chucklefucks doing the scanlations insist it's "Gattsu", there's a fucking problem to say the least. Also terrible typesetting destroys the gravity off some moments, especially screams, and I assume there's lots of screaming in Kaiji

I'm always mad when I see people not using the Dark Horse translations.

For Kaiji, FKMTkrazy did a great job. They're the only group too.

there's a ton of unreadable [narrates vertically] in the official Kaiji pt1 digital release, because Fukumoto loves to fit text in the tiny space between pictures or right along the whole 1st page of the chapter on the side and that publisher seemingly doesn't give a fuck. Well, the animu is good so all is good.

Yeah, I'll probably just start with Part 3 because I've already seen the anime and with how slow-paced it is, I don't imagine they skipped much

Kaiji 3 is a wild ride. Even better if you haven't been spoiled.

I'm on E-card right now, they only skipped a pair of style details so far. 1) upon entering the mirror room on Espoir: blacksuits shredded Kaiji's passport and branded him like cattle with a number, left forearm 2) fucking Endoh greeted Sahara and Kaiji with roses coz why not. That's it.

>branded him like cattle with a number

Being Kaiji is fucking suffering. I don't think there's many characters, let alone protagonists, who get scarred both physically and mentally as often as he does

I should've bought all the Tonegawa spinoff tankobon when I had the change when I visited Japan this summer

I still remember how the covers looked like

The day I save up enough money to visit Japan, I'm buying all the obscure hipster bullshit I can't get my hands on right now desu

RIGHT NOW

Shogi's just Chess but with a few gimmicks and also because you can't see what the pieces are because of the PS2's shitty resolution so you never know when you're going to be suddenly checkmated by Y2's invincible shogi AI.

No manga has deeply impacted me as much as Buraiden Gai.

I want to surpass myself!

I'm not that great at chess either. But I think my shogi problem is the fact that my mind doesn't register the symbols as actually menaingful, so I forget which piece does what.

And yeah, that AI was straight up bullshit. "Beginner's game" my ass

Fuck.I can't believe I feel bad for him.

Those "gimmicks" are all killer and change the game entirely though. I'm pretty okay at chess, at the very least not terrible, but trying to plan ahead in shogi just goes straight over my head. I have no idea how people can take so many different factors into account trying to make their move, it's disgusting.

reading those three scanlated chapters I couldn't shake off the zawa feeling that Tonegawa behaves like that not because of the gag nature of the manga, but ya know. That was both fun and horrible.

BEST BOY CAN'T DIE

Shogi is often said to be the game with the by far widest gap between professionals and amateurs. Trying to become a pro is absolutely absurd far moreso than in chess for example. For the longest time you could count how many people joined the professional shogi association per year on one hand. It wasn't until like 2 or 3 years ago that they lightened up a bit and let people that aren't quite at grand master level in.

WHERE
HE CAN'T DIE
NOT HIM

What is Kaiji gonna do now that he is one of the richest men in Nippon?
Fund his own gambling tournaments where he puts his fortune at stake?
Or just go to a random rigged pachinko parlor and blow it all by burning balls for a month straight?

Most I'm looking forward to next chapter in a while.

oh fuck

debasai.com/kaiji-253/

This is a website that posts spoilers but it's only up to 253 right now. No clue how that user got 254 already.

And this just keeps on getting better

>Kazuya has an older brother

Welp, looks like we know who the next villain is already.

I want to see Kaiji and Kazuya team up against Kazuki and Kazutaka

manga-spoiler.com/archives/104851

holy shit yeah me too
i wanted them to team up since forever ago but this would just make it so much better

Pretty boy.

It will be kinda cool if you read Ten first, because it will leave you little room to misinterpret Akagi's character in his spinoff manga, like many do when they start off with it.

Well, I've already watched the Akagi anime so I think I'll have some wrong impressions either way.

The last chapters are some powerful stuff. FKMT is at its best when he does these sort of life lessons.

Is part 4 and 5 seen as one? Does that mean we have 140+ One Poker chapters if you subtract part 4?

Oh! Thats the best combo im my opinion, watching Akagi and then off to Ten. Hope you enjoy and have fun with whatever you pick to read next!

Minefield Mahjong, Salvation Game and One Poker Hen are all part of Tobaku Datenroku Kaiji if you want to be technical about it.

Thanks, user, I hope I will.

I like how FKMT makes a difference between part 1, Hakairoku and Tobaku Datenroku. They all have a distinct identity, even Kaiji's look changes according to it

Zero is definitely pretty good. It's really a lighter version of Kaiji, but it's fun. I just wish there was more of it.

I don't want any more anime really. The next volumes wouldn't be as much fun to watch unless they really compress them. Plus the ending of the second season kind of immediately gets ruined by the next arc.

Is this really happening?

>we will never know what happened to Shirube
Feels bad.

>we will never see the big villains in kaiji or zero defeated
It gets worse.

Shirube is so cool I wish we knew more about him.
I wonder what will fkmt do after finishing Akagi. Will he just work towards finishing Kaiji and the new Kurosawa or will he pick up / start something else? What kind of madman works on three manga at the same time anyway!?

>the ending of the second season kind of immediately gets ruined by the next arc
I was afraid of that at first but actually I think it fits the narrative really well and deepens Kaiji's character and his place as a pariah

I agree, but season 2 ended on such a high note that I like it as is.

...

true
>tfw MIRAI BOKURA NO TENO NAKAAAAAAAAAAA

Now I just want a season of Washizu Mahjong

What is there to misinterpret?

Fukumoto is very uneven writer. I found first part of Zero subpar but second part was alright. Ten and Kurosawa were clearly written on fly but had great endings.

So far from what I've read only Kaiji and Akagi stayed consistently good.

The ending was great but I was especially moved by Gai's monologue about independence and living alone.

hope the anime never comes back. wouldn't be the same without the original composer. blacklisted from the entire industry over a bit of fucking weed, fucking nips man

Rank Zero, Akagi, Kaiji, Tokuchi (One Outs), Akiyama (Liar Game), Light (Death Note), and Lelouch (Code Geass) in terms of intelligence.

I'd honestly put Light and Lelouch rather low due to the fact that others don't have magical bullshit to rely on

I'd probably put Light at the very bottom and Lelouch one step above him.

Yeah, Light has a bad case of smart-character-not-smart-writer syndrome. Which makes his downfall really fucking stupid.

More like "writer wants character to be smart except he isn't"

the only thing Light's got for him is his thorougness, he can actually pulls off the execution of his schemes, but they're pretty bad or mediocre most of the time

What about the rest though?

I feel like Zero, Akagi, and Akiyama would comprise the top 3 of the list.

Zero is definitely smarter than Kaiji. Zero managed to teach a group of random people how to accurately calculate the square root of two to 9 decimals by hand in a short amount of time under stress when the puzzle wasn't super obvious to begin with. Kaiji needed someone else to notice that the dice game couldn't be random. Kaiji IMO isn't very "smart", but he's incredibly clever.

Agreed. I'm considering putting Kaiji at the very bottom desu.

Not that user because I don't think misinterpret is the right word, but Akagi (the manga+anime) mostly gives a shallow impression of his character; he's just shown as this inhuman, ruthless genius throughout, with little insight into his thoughts and feelings on subjects beyond gambling. Anime-onlys take this to mean that's all there is to him.
Meanwhile Akagi in Ten literally gets 3 volumes dedicated to him explaining his thoughts, feelings, and philosophy on life to his friends and the reader.

I know it's gambling related but his death-seeking attitude and way of playing also applies to life in a way, you can speculate a lot about Akagi's philosophy with the manga

Hey I'm the user! What I meant by misenterpret is sort of just as you said, , I just lacked the wording.
I meant something like that from what I've seen, people who started off with watching or just read Akagi first usually understood him as some suicidal whack, or a "gary stu" (at first), because even though there's hints, it's not easy to discern Akagis true nature through them. He says a little something about fake pleasantries and pretending in life briefly in the beginning, but it isn't until later in washizu mahjong that we see what he considers really living.
I thought about how if you read Ten first then you would notice how Akagi's character is very consistent still, and you would understand him, even if he's an edgy 13 year old.
Or, something like that.
