Let's talk about Air Gear

Let's talk about Air Gear
What went right?
What went wrong?

Was it too edgy?

>What went wrong?
OhGreat! And making roads literal powers instead of philosophies.

Moon children and sKate bit beasts.

>Was it too edgy?
At the start with the rape and sodomy. Toned down immediately but ramped up when shark showed up.

>What went right?
It came out when skate culture was still relevant in the US. Combine this with good art and decent choreography and it was bound to be some measure of good.

Good art and mechanical design
Story is okay-ish but oh great cant draw coherent scenes making people confused. Same problem with tenjo tenge

It felt like it was a series literally designed around every moderately edgy thing off urban skate and rap culture and deviantart.
You had manic pixie dream girls, aggressive inline skating, scantily clad women, gang style, fucking gothic lolitas in your pic.
IT felt like someone trying to make a story out of graffiti murals

>kururu losing
It's been so long and i'm still so mad.
I hate myself but i hate this fucking manga even more.

Take your vanilla bullshit outta here.
Swallow swallows

Did the artist go back to doing porn?

It was a shonen done perfectly. Urban setting, characters, air trek concept, story, fanservice, humor, art. Everything was greatly done.
Sure, re-reading it now feels way weaker, but at 15yo this was the best thing ever.

I agree. You need to read it when cool was good art and edgy designs with powerlevels increasing up to maximum levels. It helps that the women are hot and the artist is good with his art at times.
How did we go from
>Roller skates to traverse
to
>Roller skates to control gravity and all weapons system in the entire world

>OhGreat! And making roads literal powers instead of philosophies.
>Moon children and sKate bit beasts.

This, so fucking much. He should've stuck to street level shenanigans with the pseudo-gang turf wars and races and shit. Went way too far with the sci-fi shit.

Also, Ikki really wasn't that good a main character. He's my least favorite of the Kogarasumaru boys, even Onigiri.

I miss it so much. I remember I couldn't sleep because of how hype I was for the OVA's.Great fanservice and fights, amazing art, pants on head retarded story that worked as a normalfag filter

I'm probably buying it soon now that I have an actual job.

>We won't have trash of this quality for some time now
What's the next best thing?

>was it too edgy?

If it had more rape and MC deaths then I'd agree it was edgy but for the most part it was just over the top.

>sKate bit beasts

Fuck you that shit was awesome.

wasn't she raped? yuck

Wasn't Oh great! doing some weird ass sci fi bullshit?
I barely remember it was weird and page where the MC's crush is taking a shit and she says "oops it went back inside".

Biorg Trinity, he's only drawing it though

>Shark has regalia powers without the regalia

They were best character and girl.

It's funny how the author of that has even wierder fetishes than OG!(assuming OG! wasn't the one who proposed stuff like the toilet scene)

I loved how after showing something absolutely bonkers OG would serve us a huge pseudo-science laïus and you'd go "hmmm hmm this makes sense, expect it doesn't at all".

For the slightest reason, I don't think that's how total internal reflection works... But I don't have a water bottle and two flash lights to try it out

was there one of this for "Time" and "Pile Tornado"?

There was one for Time stop but I don't have the image with me right now. I actually bought the volume where it was shown but I forget where it is right now. It has some things to do with how in times of intense stress or stuff, your information from the eyes go directly to your brain instead of being filtered. You get to see the world slow down as you see it in 300 fps or whatever. Should be around chapter 40+ or so, it's the next chapter after that one.

>Fuck you that shit was awesome.
They were retarded and you know it. It got dumber as it went on and we got people summoning the Roman legion and shit.

OG got sucked into Fate.

>What went wrong?
Oh Great did what he does best and went full retard. He did it with Tenjou Tenge too, adding nonsensical plot points, making the MC unlikable, throwing in NTR bait, unnecessary relationship drama between characters, and a thrown to gather unsatisfying ending.

I don't think so.
She got beat the fuck up and made into a cripple while being mirin by Sora's brother.

This was my favorite part of Air Gear BY FAR.
I was a physics nerd when it came out and even I knew it was bullshit but I appreciated the attempt and the approach he took was so fucking ridiculous it was like watching bill nye on crack

Well I mostly meant Edgy in terms of this sort of 2cool style where...it's sort of difficult to describe and may just be my own tendencies but it was like every character in it was like Haruko seen through Naota's eyes: this strangely alluring and mysterious adult thing.

To this day, and I'm older than most of the characters now, I still find something strangely over the top in the character designs.

>best character
Nigga that was Kazu

Simca has seemingly won though (based on the last chapter) and she's the best girl in the series, imo.

Same dilemma as with Beelzebub.
Air Gear had Ikki and Kazu.
Beelzebub had Oga and Furuuichi.
MC should have been someone else.

And this.

>Sure, re-reading it now feels way weaker

I re-read it recently and it was actually way better when didn't have to wait years for the plot to happen.

OG! is weird.
If he would get his shit together he would make a decent manga but always turns it to shit for some reason.

I think around Behemoth Arc it started going to shit when they were riding air waves.

The skate beasts were awesome when they were just visualizations or characterizations of tricks and shit, Eyeshield style, but halfway through, that shit turned literal.

It feels like a lot of subplots weren't solved properly, or at all, and the ending was shit. Some characters and their motivations disappeared into nothing. Like Minami Rinta, who seems to be related to Ikki and responsible for a lot of shit that happened but he just disappears.
MC was also a moron. I wanted Sora to win.
While it probably would have been a better story had it stayed Jet Set Radio - Air Edition, I actually did enjoy what it turned into.
It was less what happened and more the needlessly complicated execution that makes it seem like such a clusterfuck.

Shame Biorg Trinity is so boring. I was hoping for another ride like Air Gear or even Tenjo Tenge.

There was rape in this? The only thing I recall was the older sister having some weird shit machine in her.

>Biorg Trinity

>everyone bashes Oh great and says he should get someone else to write his mangos
>he does
>it's the trippiest shit ever printed

>The skate beasts were awesome when they were just visualizations or characterizations of tricks and shit,
This I can agree with. It's the slipperly slope of trying to make something mundane look more cooler in art. But OG couldn't just leave it at that.

Ikki's gaggle of female friends get raped by the skulls in the first chapter when his group is dismantled.

Beelzebub is nowhere near as bad as Air Gear in that sense.

Oga was a decent enough MC, and he was played for laughs a lot, and Furuichi is almost constantly present, to the point of being the Deuteragonist. They both play off each other super well too.

I can't remember a point where Ikki was anywhere near as likeable as Oga, and Kazu is straight up a side character in Air Gear, alongside the rest of Ikki's team. It was Ikki and his boys, rather than Oga and Furuichi in Beelzebub. He's nowhere near as prominent as Furuichi is in Air gear, despite being so much more likeable than Ikki.

>What went right?

Art is godly. The concept is fun. OG's environments can be cool, scary, hype, and comfy. The whole Behemoth Arc. Kazu was based. Sora was interesting to watch, even if his motivations seemed inconsistent at times.

>What went wrong?

Somebody tricked OG into thinking his manga wasn't ridiculous enough. So what does he do? He jumps the shark. We don't need world politics in a manga about street fighting and inline skates. The American military didn't need to get involved. Emily's budding potential as a Stormrider was sidelined so an Obama look-alike could cash in on the president's mounting popularity.

>not wanting to summon Caesar's bayonet wielding fishman army using the power of decked out skates

>What went wrong?
He made Sora a misunderstood villain. Making all the pain and death he caused didn't matter. And he killed Kilik for nothing, even though he revived all the other characters.

This thread made me read it again.
I didn't like it much when it was ongoing, but after several more readings I've come to really like it.

Still better than a mustache-twirling evil-for-the-sake-of-evil villain. He just wanted to improve his lot in life and things snowballed out of control as he went on.
The whole thing about killing God/Gravity was pretty retarded, though.

They were literal from the get go iirc

Like characters could always physically see them and shit like that.

Nah, all just visuals. Even when flame king fist used his "fire" it was just people seeing things not real heat.

the only scan we had online were bad scan, with bad translation and sometimes small and blurry text,a lot of people hate it because they couldn't understand what was going on,but I did,the problem was the first thing I said, and the author added a lot of unnecessary philosophy, and the author would do something crazy that make no sense and then explain it the next chapter, like a lot of ikki fight where he punch people and it make no sense on how he got there and just felt out of no where, but then he explain it the next chapter on what happen

pretty much everything that happened after spitfire death, also Oure usual mess for shipping

>>Was it too edgy?
only first chapter

>What went right?
art, as usual and some character like Yoshitsune and kazu

I'm pretty sure Gabishi shot actual plasma from his skates.
Also pompadour guy punching the shit out of the front of a running truck in the first volumes wasn't a visual.

Damn, Nike looks like THAT?!

I miss the art so much

>Gabishi
Pretty sure that happens after we go full literal.

>pompadour
Feats of physical strength aren't what we'really talking about. Just when the series statlrted to take the skate bit beast and imagery as more than cool effects.

I'm still waiting for more, OG, you promised it.

Kururu best girl

the Del Rey Manga edition? how is it?

Not enough porn

I think there will be a second part (sequel).

Requested the page when either the main guy or girl had huge wings on their skates and they looking over the city. That moment in the manga blew me away the first time I saw it, and gave me high hopes, and then it made me sad to remember, due to how things went to shit later on.

you get so much ass and tits in the mango that you get kinda desintesized about porn of the characters

The best characters were guys like Yoh and Kazu. Yoh was cool because he could swing with athletes who had been literally genetically engineered to ride ATs. Yoh didn't have any special programming or inherit physical ability. He was just a gifted human who wanted to cash in on his talents and happened to have the power to push the Gravity Children around whenever they stuck their dicks into his territory.

Kazu was similar. OG took attention to drive home how hard Kazu worked to ride the way he did. So whenever he was in the spotlight, it felt like he earned it. It's a shame Kazu never came out of Ikki's shadow, but I guess his role as Ikki's No. 2 is kind of built in from the start.

Nope, not at all.
No nipples, no fap. I'd rather fap to Tenjo Tenge.

>Kazu never came out of Ikki's shadow
u wot m8 did you skip the Ikki vs Kazu fight at that wierd ass religion church or the Nike fight?

the extra chapter got me by surprise, didn't expect it at all and it hit me in the feels pretty good since I missed reading AG a lot. This series will forever have a special place in my heart, it's silly and over the top but I genuinely enjoyed it and the characters.

Yeah it's implied without the storm regalia(which is just a hard counter for everything) Ikki's actually weaker than Kazu.

what happened to Mikan and Kilik? I don't remember if they survived the fight against Sora

;_;

The wiki says she's alive, but Kilik died, unfortunately.

They did not

Kilik quite lost his head in the fight.

>Kilik?
Dead.

now post the one with his head on Sora's lap

Kazu went right. Almost everything else went wrong. Even Kazu's girlfriend got replaced by Obama for a while and they couldn't have any romantic development.

Mikan's fate wasn't made clear in the mango, same with Shiraume

Kilik was the true best boy
>try to keep everything stable
>get cucked by your adachi-esque brother figure
>get killed fighting both and trying to pass on your regalia to the only person who can stop your asshole brother figure

> they couldn't have romantic development
Not outside my fanfics at least

best boy was Yoshitsune and this is not up for debate

>tfw too stupid to understand Tenjou Tenge

this page here was painful to read, poor Kilik

FUCKING DELETE THIS, IM NOT OVER IT YET.

Man, Rika was an idiot. The best boy was in front of her and did not notice.

It's basically a centuries long gambit by the Demon Exorcist family to kill Kago Sohaku by having a Nagi descendant go along with his plan then having someone else beat the shit out of him when he finally reincarnates. Kinda like luring him out and then going for his throat.

delete pls

Rika deserves every terrible thing that happens to her.

This page?

Well shit, was that really in the 2nd chapter? Thank you, user.

No problem.

For me it was this page (and not the spread that happens a page after) that sold me on the initial tone. There is a madness to goes with any extreme sport. And Air Gear was about people who live on that border and I will always remember this guy telling Ikki he was just crawling on the ground.

That being said it is a really nice spread and also captures that insanity.

you only watch the random hentai stuff ogure ito place randomly
>ib4 some user upload the girl which use THAT cosplay

pretty much all women in that family are idiots

>hundreds of chapters later this place turns out to be stupendously important

I love this shit.

Gabishi's laserbeams were the pinnacle of OG's troll science, I can't believe someone can forget this.
It's explained as being a variant of the fang technique, where Gabishi's ATs accelerate and stop so fast during his kicks a huge buildup of heat is released. He then throws a dozen of those kicks in something like 2 seconds like ChunLi, and somehow the heat is enough to produce a beam of concentrated superheated air.
I think OG was legit high as a kite when he thought of this.

The characters definitely went right. Air Gear had the best and most well developed side characters I've seen in a shounen ever. Also the art along is worth reading Air Gear for.

Nah OG! is aware how silly the pseudo science shit is.

Some of the characters even bring up how the explanations make no sense.

...

Don't worry I think everyone loved his troll science. Every time a new huge power was introduced you knew the explication would be out of this world.

WOKE

Kururu was also best girl.

I'm not following unless dude turned the bitches into cats just because

she was a fucking angel

God damn I wanna fuck Simca
long hair, short hair, I don't care

the fact that she survived and probably (hopefully) remember saying and doing all those terrible things to Kilik make me feel less angry.

shes also a single mom now.
