Pathetic attempt at "attack number 1".

>that artstyle
So glad the animation industry grew up

I am watching Infinite Ryvius. Love the atmosphere, it gives me some Eva feels.

Slam Dunk but with a dumb fire crotch slut MC

What about manga? I just finished reading Tokyo Babylon.

Ruronry Kenshinn. Such a shame I didn't watched it before

This gem

Picking this up because that girl is cute as fuck. She better not be a minor character, OP.

Its the main character

I am amazed by the lack of shame anime producers have.

>Wow this Eva anime is pretty popular
>Let's make something that looks EXACTLY like it!

In America, studios would get sued for stuff like this.

Is this actually decent? I keep hearing it's bad shounenshit with a terrible soundtrack.

It's not any worse than any other shounen. If you generally like shounen you should like RK. It's got a good amount of historical references too, which is cool. Some characters are people who actually existed, though obviously the show isn't a documentary. You should read the manga though at some point because the anime doesn't animate the entire last plot arc. Wasn't really too much of a fan of the OVAs and movies though.

What are you talking about? She's cute as hell!

Gunbuster

>He's looking at the half naked man instead of the cutie

I like shounen, but I'm sort of worried about investing time into a series that may dip in quality and become trash like Naruto and Bleach. Is it like those, or is it more up there with the likes of Yu Yu Hakusho, FMA, Magi etc?

Alright, pre-2000's thread. I'd like to have an opportunity to discuss one of my favorite shows ever, that being Sherlock Hound. I would definitely consider as one of the greatest animated TV series of all time, easily. It's probably like top 5 overall for me.

>Kind of like a spiritual successor to Lupin III, which itself was one of the earliest truly groundbreaking TV animations
>Made by the guys at TMSE, who collectively contributed a lot of best Japanese animation at the time
>Animation is well beyond the level of the average TV animated series, as you can imagine
>Hayao Miyazaki did animating and directing on this, if you need any more convincing
>Fantastic looking backgrounds and details, which has a very timeless/fantasy vibe
>The series is essentially a cool blend of mystery, action, and adventure

It actually sort of surprises me that it isn't far more recognized universally. I know it has fans, but I almost never see it seriously mentioned, even on Sup Forums. Hopefully, in a not too distant day, it will be slightly more acknowledged for its objective merits, and the fact that it's pretty damn fun. I might make a proper thread about it here one day, if enough people care for it.

Haven't these threads been a bit frequent lately? At this rate it risks turning into a general which would be a disaster for all old anime discussion and would effectively ban every non Gainax OVA from being discussed.

Anyway, since the last thread, I think I've seen one episode of Infinite Ryvius. It's enjoyable, but I feel no need to watch it all in one go.

I just watched the first episode. It was pretty fun, thanks, OP. I love silly old sports anime like this.

It's just like red jacket in that everything it stands for is stellar, but the viewing experience is uneven as hell after Miyazaki leaves. Some very good and some just watchable episodes.

Uh, user one of the best periods for anime was the post-Eva boom influenced era.

Also I agree with this, these threads shouldn't happen more than once or twice a month.

I'm talking about artstyle here. Every anime has attractive characters.

I hated EVA but liked Ryvius. The more you know

That formula sounds like a HOME RUN to me!

Generals are mostly defined by how they backlink to previous threads and remake threads once the previous one hits the bump limit, neither of which happens here.

Barely counts as pre-2000s but I just started this, first episode was fantastic. Nice to see an isekai show that actually puts effort into the MC's life before the world switch.

Ok every summer i watch nadia the secret of blue water

Saw a couple of eps a few months ago and dug it. Needed this reminder since more episodes have been subbed

It's a great series with plenty of food for thought but most of the time you'll find yourself wanting to throttle one of these asshats so it isn't exactly a pleasant viewing experience.

That's beside the point. I'm talking about plagiarizing.

That said, the so-called "post-Eva boom" is vastly overstated. Most of the anime "boom" can just be attributed to the switch to digital animation which massively reduced the time and costs of making anime.

It's one of my favorite Sci-Fi anime along with Rahxephon. I haven't found a single newer Sci-Fi series that kept my hooked like Mugen no Ryvius.

>digital animation
I don't think we're talking about the same thing at all.
There was a lot more risk taken in terms of story after NGE's success. It's quite evident and a lot of good came out of it too.

I don't really see how it copies NGE. It's more like Lord of the flies in space. Having to survive on your own, conflicts among the different groups among the station due to living conditions and envy etc.

How does it at all resemble NGE?
They don't even look all that similar

>filename

>Most of the anime "boom" can just be attributed to the switch to digital animation
The "post-Eva boom" that that user is referring to was the previous 5 years before digital animation arrived

Progressing with Patlabor TV.
kek

Finally after months of waiting the torrent for this finished downloading yesterday. But... the watchlist is long, so it'll have to wait.

Which is better? This or Attack No. 1 (that is now being subbed)?

I prefer You for it's humor and No. 1 for it's story which is feels somewhat less derivative. Only saw a few eps of both though

I've never seen it. I'm going purely off the poster. The character design, perspective, and Christ-like pose in the back are clearly meant to evoke thoughts of Eva.

Digital animation wasn't suddenly used in 2000. It had been in use since the 80s. Its use increased a lot in the late 90s, the same time period of this so-called post-Eva boom.

watched 150 of UY last night. Finally on the home stretch.

>I've never seen it. I'm going purely off the poster. The character design, perspective, and Christ-like pose in the back are clearly meant to evoke thoughts of Eva.
.t 20 mal entries

Was the moe boom exclusively a result of the switch to digital? Were there any other influences? Did Eva make any contribution to this development?

she was a great tomboyish character

EVA definetly popularized the isekai chuuni wish-fulfilment harem genre

>what shows you watching?

Kare Kano
Voltes V
Ideon
Getter Robo
Mazinger Z
Daitarn 3
Macross
Victory Gundam
Dagram

I should be on /m/ instead of Sup Forums

True. Kare Kano is the boyhood of the /m/echa genre

Wasn't that SAO
Eva doesn't even resemble isekai in any way.

aho

I want to watch Akazukin Chacha again

Was there even a post Eva boom?
Anime numbers were already constantly increasing before Eva and the trend to switch from OVA to tv anime also happened before Eva.

>post Eva-boom
no such thing. Anime titles was already increasing during the mid-late 80s

The number of original anime exploded in 1998

>source: my ass

Actually I may have spoken too soon. I just knew about Cowboy Bebop, Neo Ranga and Lain and made assumptions. May not be accurate after all

This is too late for a Eva boom, Eva was in fall 1995. A Eva boom would have been visible at the end of 1996 and at the latest in mid 1997.

Eva also aired 18:30, making it unlikely to start a late night anime boom.
The reason for the late night boom is unlikely to be Eva.
It was the success of the early late night anime in 1996/199, and the changing business mode(studies switched from Ova to tv anime) that created the boom, not Eva.

It is a fact that the number of tv anime sharply increased in 1998.
You are on Sup Forums, and should at least be able to use Google.

recent Devilman episode summary:
>fire demon (Aguilar) is the demon of the week, supposed to work together with chimera thing and demon general (Zannin)
>relentlessly provokes and baits Zannin for no reason until he snaps and whips the shit out of him
>Zannin chains him and then proceeds to completely forget about him
>Aguilar escapes on chimera, Zannin suddenly catches up and the same thing happens
>Zannin decides to kill him but then lets him go for no reason and they both fall conveniently next to Devilman
>Hijinks ensue and Zannin whips the shit out of Devilman, Aguilar cheers him on until he decides to sabotage him
>Aguilar destroys the supports on nearby nuclear dome silo thing, it rolls in his way and he falls into a lake and dies
>Same dome rolls near DM's unconscious girlfriend, half-dead Devilman comically dashes to her rescue
>Zannin chases him, literally gets squished by the dome which explodes and blows up the city.
>everything is fine and business as usual next episode
I love this show so much

I thought it was reairings of Eva that happened at late night that caused late night to evolve.
But don't know when this supposedly happened, so that's just rumours.

I looked through the TV anime of 1996 at MAL, and found Those Who Hunt Elves, nothing else was listed as late night. But that is something, and quite early, yeah.
1997 has Eat-Man, Hyper Police, Haunted Junction, Hareluya II Boy, Misute=naide Daisy, Berserk, Kyuuketsuhime Miyu, Virus: Virus Buster Serge, Fortune Quest L, Next Senki Ehrgeiz, Shinkai Densetsu Meremanoid

Some anime are not lised with airing time, but I believe there should be a clear pattern here.

The first Late Night Anime, Those Who Hunt Elves, aired in fall 1996, and was then followed by a bunch the following year.

Can't be bothered to look through 1995 in case there were any before.

That is the worst anime ever made though.

Yeah, your taste is that questionable.

>posts Digibro unironically

AAAHAAAAHAHAHAAHAHA

This faggot is one of the most unknowledgeable people, you will ever hear talking about the anime industry.

> the trend started after evangelion before it anime was largely aimed at children
Gundam, Slayers, Fuushigi Yuugi, and even shows like DBZ all had a big teenage and young adult following.
All of these shows aired before Eva.
The trend was already there before Eva.

Another thing that people tend to ignore is that Eva was really popular with normfags, teenagers and children.
For fucks sake it aired at 18:30.
NGE had a tv rating average from 7,1 this is higher than modern OP or DBS, it wasn't really the Otaku market that made it a hit but the normfag market.

You're basically right, but it's probably worth making a distinction between anime that were aimed at adults or teenagers and anime that were aimed at children, but still garnered adult or teenage followings. Also, Eva was big with otaku as well. It wasn't just the normalfag market that made it successful.

Here's the true history of anime, user.

Okay, I did it anyway, I looked at 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995.

Super Zugan from fall 1992 is late night. Nothing else is listed as late night in any of the years from 1992 to 1995.
As you get far back, an increasing number of anime does not have any time lised, so inaccuracies may increase, and not worth looking further back either.

I think the intent was to insult me by implying I'm just repeating Digibro's latest video, they may not take it seriously themself.

You didn't really pick the most important points to complain about. Those should be obvious. But from what I feel like should be true would be that there were some anime aimed at families too. Some types of anime just feel like they are for hyperactive children or teenagers looking for porn, but there are also some that feel like they are intended for the whole family, where everyone gather in front of the TV. That's how I feel like it is.

Also, it isn't only Digibro that says this about the Eva boom. The Wikipedia article about the history of anime makes similar claims:
>Evangelion started a series of so-called "post-Evangelion" or "organic" mecha shows. Most of these were giant robot shows with some kind of religious or difficult plot. These include RahXephon, Brain Powerd, and Gasaraki. It also led to late-night experimental TV shows. Starting with Serial Experiments Lain (1998), late-night Japanese television became a forum for experimental anime such as Boogiepop Phantom (2000), Texhnolyze (2003) and Paranoia Agent (2004).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_anime

Eva might be the first that was marketed as deep on an adult level which would explain the ratings, word of mouth could've played a strong part too

>Brain Powerd
poor poor tomino

I just don't like pretentious chuuni wishfulfilment harem shows. I didn't care for the monster of the week. I didn't care for the beta MC. I didn't care for the dramatization that felt forced at times. I didn't care for the out of character moments like shinji jerking off. I didn't care for everyone wanting his dick (including 2 males) despite the fact that he has no personality. He's just being a self-insert. I didn't care for the meaningless symbolism or for how long they took to point out the obvious.

But clearly. It's MY taste that's questionable. And not everyone-else's. I bet you like Akira too or some shitty Miyazaki movie.

He does myanimelist.net/profile/DuelGundam2099

>doesn't drop anime
Why did you give me this profile?

>digibro
>linking to MAL accounts unironically
Good thread. All we need now is that Bubblegum Crisis guy to come in and start going apeshit.

>doesn't read manga
I think this is the bigger red flag, here.

Manga are a mess to keep up with. There's better sites to keep track of manga.

It was derailed due to evafags of course. I think NGE should be banned from these threads.

Oh hey, I started that today

Noriko is cute.

I also watched the Daicon shorts for the first time.

rewatched these shorts, now I've got a lot of reaction images.

Literally nothing wrong with using MAL.

TB was pretty good, but Sup Forums is more anime than manga and meme, seasonal manga like OPM don't count.

Those first few episodes before Miyazaki got involved were painful. Then after Miyazaki leaves, the show becomes a slog again.

>mfw he actually liked akira and Ghibli movies

who's your favorite pre-2000s director anons?

The last pre 2000 show I watched was You're Under Arrest. So many things in the show that were jokes at the time turned out to be truths later on.

>Also, Eva was big with otaku as well.
True.

>Also, it isn't only Digibro that says this about the Eva boom. The Wikipedia article about the history of anime makes similar claims:
The anime boom happened 1998, all of these shows except Lain aired later.

>the Wikipedia article about the history of anime makes similar claims
Wikipedia is a questionable source, especially in a small fandom like the anime community.
Furthermore it is to note, that the entire section about Evas influence on anime has 0 sources.

you just posted him (?)

The same as after 2000.

Akira is aesthetically, the most amazing film I've ever seen. Calling the Akira film bad is ridiculous considering it adapted an unfinished story. Also "Ghibli films" is not a genre.

I don't recall ever saying that. The problem is when you start linking to people's accounts and talking about them. It's like e-celeb cancer. Don't cross streams, if you want to discuss them go there.

Nice.

>Junichi Sato
I just watched this film of his, fuckin brilliant.

I do not have a MAL profile, onlydecent tastes. Kindly fuck off, Schwarz.

>Calling the Akira film bad is ridiculous considering it adapted an unfinished story.
I call it bad because it is a bad movie. You can make up excuses all you want.

>Akira is aesthetically, the most amazing film I've ever seen
To me it was a bunch of over animated scenes that didn't look more impactful with their increase in frames. It lacked a director. None of the scenes held any weight. There was no personality in them. Nothing clever about angles or timing or anything like that. If that's genuinely the most amazing film you've ever seen. Then I'd advise you to watch more movies. Random LN-adaptations have better directing than Akira did. And I'm not being insincere either. Just compare Akira to Baka to Test. I couldn't sit through the entire Akira movie. I tried just yesterday. And I can sit through a 4-hour long korean movie just fine. So don't give me that adhd crap

but you have to understand the context. The profile was linked just to prove a statement. We're discussing anime here. Having some sort of insight isn't a big deal. At least I'm not that bothered with it unless it becomes actual eceleb talk (like the Digibro talk itt)

Forget to quote

>Also, it isn't only Digibro that says this about the Eva boom. The Wikipedia article about the history of anime makes similar claims:

>the Wikipedia article about the history of anime makes similar claims
Wikipedia is a questionable source, especially in a small fandom like the anime community.
Furthermore it is to note, that the entire section about Eva's influence on anime has 0 sources

The Wiki article on Lain states:
>The authors were asked in interviews if they had been influenced by Neon Genesis Evangelion, in the themes and graphic design. This was strictly denied by writer Chiaki J. Konaka in an interview, arguing that he had not seen Evangelion until he finished the fourth episode of Lain.
This has even a source(interview by Konaka):
>konaka.com/alice6/lain/hkint_e.html
(The translation is garbage).

>out of character moments like shinji jerking off.
>it's out of character for a teenager to jerk off

The scene was only there for shock-value. And people like you defending something so blatantly out of place are just stupid. You're not going to convince me so why even try? Or, to give you an answer more in your taste: Who are you quoting?

Is it bad my favourite thing about 70's anime is FASHION

Stylish as fuck

Infinite Ryvius is kino

>over animated
>no personality
>lacked a director
Wow it's like you really prepped this response huh user? You were waiting for me to take the bait.
Akira is not a bad film, and that's literally a legitimate excuse as to why the story isn't even nearly developed as the manga. Which went on publishing for two more years after the film's release.
>genuinely the most amazing film you've ever seen
I said aesthetically, it cannot be topped.
>Baka to Test
OK what the fuck this truly is bait.

I definitely think it's better than Naruto and Bleach. I ended up dropping both of those fairly early on but always watched RK when it was on and finished both the anime and manga. Plus RK isn't anywhere near as long as either of them.

It doesn't really have the same sort of power level creep iirc.

Truly is. I really liked this shot

are you enjoying this show as much as me user?
