Battle Royale

What the fuck was his problem and why did he ruin the manga?

He really wanted to win

You need a bad guy

Did you even read the end?
He was literally massively brain damaged due to a car accident.

How many thing did this guy survived?

I don't really remember, but I remember dropping it after he fucking survived best boy Mimura. Then picked it up again to finish it.

Literal brain damage.

From the top of my head:
>2 fights with resident martial arts expert
>point blank bomb
>car crash
>arm injury that should've left him crippled
>at least 1 gun wound
There is probably more, since, if I remeber corectly, he also ignored a bunch of shit after getting armor vest.

Now that I remember
Didn't they shoot him in the face and he still survived!?

Fuck, I think yeah.
If memory serves me right, last battle was
>car crash
>shotgun through the vest and stomach
>headshot that he survived
>then 1 more as coup de grace

Brain problems, obviously.

If you were part of the program would you go gung ho or just keep hiding?

I never got around to reading the original novel, was he as bullshit there?

...

Jesus Christ, someone that draws worse than ONE and Shinichi Hiramoto combined.

Going gung ho would definitely get you killed.

It's the alien 9 and milk closet mangaka, outerwordly art and horribly fucked up plots.

How this guy still has his job goes beyond my comprehension.

Btw has some of you read the ten years anniversary two volumes?

The ones that cover the backstory of the lighthouse group (BR Angel "something", iirc).

Fucked up for no reason entertaining shit.

psychopaths exist in real life too

>reading battle royale for the first time
>character you like gets a backstory or is fleshed out halfway through

He was just following the norm, like a guy that uses a tie to go to a restaurant, it was etiquette.

He's one of my favorite villain of all time but he was too OP. He should have lost to mimura or suigimura.

He was in a car accident that sent a splinter into his brain that made him an autistic psychopath.

Not as much as the manga made him IIRC.

I bought the licensed one volume edition a while back.
It was really fun.

Isn't that a good thing?

They say at one point in the novel that he is able to do pretty much everything at amazing levels of skill, but it means nothing to him. It drives this one dude insane because he was really passionate about music or art or something and then he walks in on Autismo painting/playing something far, far superior to his own work and sees that he has no understanding or care for it and he's going to throw it in the garbage the next day. So him being able to do anything you can do better has always been canon.

But he was never able to become the GOAT martial artist in real time just by watching people, that was manga-only bullshit.

Nah.

Rip his mom.

The only time a side character ever got a backstory or any focus for that matter was if they were going to die soon.

Guess that's true.

A slice of life anime/manga featuring the battle royal cast would have been comfy as fuck.

Is the manga better or worse than the novel?

You can't really compare it. The manga is so far over the top and also makes everybody look 20+ years old. Just read it, it's an enjoyable ride.

I know people hate him, because he killed basketball guy and martial arts guy who were best boys, but I fucking loved that edgy faggot.
He always managed to bring the hype, like almost all the best and most memorable scenes are the ones where he is involved in.
I still vividly remember how I felt when I saw this scene.
Absolute kino.

I liked the novel a lot more.

It depends. The guy who wrote the novel said the mango's better. I like both for different reasons.

The manga is kinda crazy at times (in a good way imo) and characters get more back stories/are more fleshed out in it.
It's very gory and lewd at times. The art is brilliant at times and not so much sometimes.

The ending of the manga drags like hell though.
Also I hope you can read in a language other than english because the english translation literally fucks with the story.

>I know people hate him, because he killed basketball guy and martial arts guy who were best boys, but I fucking loved that edgy faggot.
Same. He's so absurdly good.

>the english translation literally fucks with the story.
How so?

The translator changed the premise; it goes from being a government program designed to just fuck with teenagers to being a soldier R&D game show kind of thing.

They changed the story and made up bullshit. The story involves the state putting kids on an island so they have to kill each other. The state wants to basically scare the youth and show that they can fuck with anyone. It's a "let's kill some so they won't bitch" kind of thing.

The english translation made up some bullshit by saying that it's a tv show broadcasted and watched by people all around the country. The translator made up stuff like saying that there's cameras around the island and stuff like that.

But it's all bs, there isn't any of that.

It sounds like they were trying to put in parts of the movie to make it closer to that.

Yeah but it just doesn't work because the manga obviously doesn't visually acknowledge anything the translators made up.

Everytime this guy showed up you knew shit was going down.
I like that he was a super OP antagonist, it felt like he was an unstoppable force of nature rather than a human and watching the characters struggle to even survive against him really sucked me in.

Even his coat was OP and kept landing back on his shoulders.

Eh, I read it when I was younger and I legitimately don't remember anything feeling really jarring, and I wasn't told about it being inaccurate beforehand. If you're not looking for it it's not that bad.

I read it in french first (the manga), then I read the novel in english and only then I read the mango in english.

So yeah, maybe that's why I noticed it so much.

The coat was great it was chuuni as fuck, but it made him really imposing and just seeing his silhoutte with the coat in some scenes really made his spectre like appearance mire menacing.

Why exactly did they decide to get American comic book writer Keith Giffen to rewrite the script for the English release? All he did was add dumb western pop culture references and create plot holes like claiming that it was all a reality TV show with cameras even though the lack of cameras is a plot point.

French people are lucky, don't you guys get the most translations out of any language?

Correct me if I am wrong, but the french were the first or ine of the first that created modern day comics right?

Yeah the coat was great because it could take several forms and I think it definitely contributed a lot to kiriyama's appearance. It's style over logic but I like it.

No idea because I watch and read everything in english unless I buying manga. But I sometimes see french subs and translations of manga before the english ones.

France spends roughly as much money on manga/anime as the us as a whole. But france has 60M people while the us has over 300M people.

Also I'm not french nor do I live in france.

France and belgium pioneered in comics. Belgian French comics are still a huge thing in both countries.

Quebec?

Belgium.

>The translator made up stuff like saying that there's cameras around the island and stuff like that.
>But it's all bs, there isn't any of that.
Even worse, it created plot holes since if there were cameras, none of the MC's plans would have worked.

...

>brain damage

So he's 90% of Sup Forums? Also, canon brain damaged savant here, picking this manga up, thanks for telling me who the real good guy is.

Yup, we get a lot of stuff that haven't even gotten fan translations in English.

hallokes

That and also the fact that the gubmint used a fucking satellite to see what Kawada was doing instead of using those """cameras""".

While it's true that Franco Belgian titles were among the first modern comics I think the honor for creating the genre goes to either Great Britain or Switzerland, depending on what's the definition of "modern comic".
Pic related is from the mid 1800s by some Swiss guy - forgot to save his name when I saved the image sorry about that.

I'm a french speaker though. not wallen

>playing with his muscle ligaments after a gunshot wound so he can pull the trigger properly
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Something about this makes me cringe harder than the entire gory manga combined.

my bad

This SUDDENLY KI POWERS fight was dumb as all fuck and I loved this series.

There was literally no point in adding ki especially if Kiriyama wasn't going to do shit with it ever again in the story.

Fucking hell I hate this rediculous part so fucking much

Sickle-slut best waifu.

It would be very hard to pin point who TRULY started the first comic because such a comic would probably be lost and forgotten and it's hard to say what is and isn't a comic when you're looking at "primitive" comics like the one you posted. (don't mean that in a bad way)

Tintin had a big impact here in europe though.

Flemish speaking people make up over half of the country so statistically it was the good bet to make.

I really liked this part because of how the flowers and leaves were moving with the ki and as a whole it was super entertaining. BUT IT REALLY MADE NO SENSE. Why would the mangaka include something like that in a realistic manga? I wonder what the original author must have been thinking lmao.
Also Kiriyama broke a fucking tree with his fist.

Koushun Takami

>He is a genius for action, designing cool things and making interesting plots

>He is basically a retard when it comes to characters and dialogues

She's one of the most twisted and fucked characters I've ever seen in my life.

It's weird that he hasn't written anything since BR. Though at least he didn't write shit books.

The ki fight looked beautiful but it was still so fucking stupid that no matter how wonderfully composed and drawn it was that I just can't enjoy it

It was the single worst moment in this manga

She had a hard life

>In the novel, Mitsuko is abused by several individuals. When she was nine years old, her mother was paid to let three men rape and videotape her. Next, she was raped by her trusted elementary school teacher when she told him of her previous rape. A friend of hers witnesses the rape and spreads a rumor which leads to the teacher's resignation. Later, Mitsuko's mother again accepted payment to let Mitsuko be raped but Mitsuko resisted, accidentally killing her mother in the process. She is sent to live with relatives, only to be molested once again by the father of the household.

meant for

He should have put that fight in a manga that isn't BR.

This whole series is so over-the-top, I can't help but have almost no suspension of disbelief.

In the manga it broke my heart because her dad was actually a good guy who loved her daughter but had to fuck off because of money. It's fucking tragic because soma wouldn't have been abused if it wasn't for her stepdad. And every horrible thing she's done after that was because of him.

Imagine how different her life would have been if her dad stayed. Though her class would have still been chosen for the BR game.

Does this sort of shit happen in Japan?

Everything except the teacher raping the student BECAUSE she got raped is stuff that happens a fair amount even in America

Wow, how does one girl get raped so much?

She's got some kind of rape magnet.

She also prostitutes some of her classmates in the manga and uses the fact that she's underage to blackmail rich dudes, she's a complete asshole.

The creation of child pornography wasn't illegal in Japan until 1999.

What's the drawer up to today?

The volume 9 of black was like 4 years ago

>drawer

Come on, user

>What was his problem?
Did you read the manga? He had brain damage. Also he doesn't ruin the manga at all, he's one of the scariest and ominous villains. Kiriyama provides a lot of tension when he's suspected to be around and also there's the undeniable cool factor.

Speaking of him I tried to read some of his other stuff and really didn't like it. Even the art looked worse.

This thread took me fucking back, picking this up for old time's sake.
