I'm afraid I have to say I cannot for the life of me remember what the context to this was, but I guess that's also what you're getting at with the 'long overdue' thing. But then, my memory can be inconsistent.
Given known history, I think there's a good chance both sides come out of an encounter like that unscathed, the only possible casualty arguably being dignity (at least on one side).
