When you think about it like that you would think there should be a shadow crossing him but I'm trying to follow the shadow and it seems like it might be possible. The shadow is connecting to the table in the bottom left, then it would be connecting with the top of the table until it gets to Gendo's right (as you're looking at him) and then goes up the wall. I could be completely wrong but it seems like it could work to me. To make those shadows the light would be coming somewhere to the left of him (as you're looking at him).
