probably the best cg i've seen in a tv anime, but it still pales in comparison to the amazing stuff in many MMDs, and fails to compete with illustration animation
the problem is studios still look to cg as a cost cutting measure when good cg often cost more than illustration
just look at how little resource was put into hair and clothing simulation compared to many amateur renders, instead they use a ton of particle and overlay effects that are simple to render

This. Consistent story and quality, almost no plot holes. I think it!s hugely underrated. The anime was good as animated demo for the characters and the world setup somewhat but the story is completely different from the second half of the series, compared to the manga. The manga is far better. It's partly about the character development of the mental models (ship AIs represented as girls and young women) which is quite interesting in itself. Other than that, it's military themed sci-fi with huge alien-made ships that mimic old warships from the 2 world wars.

They only need to work on the characters a bit. The machine cg is pretty great. But I think a high quality oldschool mech animation would suit the manga style better.
