I'm 18 years old (turning 19 in April), and just applied for a Correctional Officer position at my local counties prison. I probably will get it as I am close to getting my Administration of Justice Associates Degree from my local CC, and have some decent references from my professors. Also, jails have a shit time trying to fill correctional positions. This position is for people no younger than 18 years old, but also no older than 21 years old. It serves as a job to help younger people get into law enforcement or some bullshit like that. Pays $20 an hour.
A few questions:

I dont really have that much experience in jail but what little i had was pretty rough. I always thought that general advice like that was terrible. VERY FEW people actually do that and just lay in bed and those that do better have a good reason like they are old. I think better adivce would be to prepare a person for the worst (its worse than full blown homelessness, it seems similar to military boot camp.). Youre going to be fucked either way but you will survive. It is very harsh and traumatizing for everyone and you may spend years after you get out unstable and paranoid. Prepare for a racial confrontation because that is the most common thing that happens its like a giant war. Dont be comfortable, it will be like relaxing in a boxing match. Infact that is a good way to appraoch it, like you are going into a boxing match.
Why do you even have to ask these questions? They depend heavily upon you, your character and stature. Have you seen cops the tv show? DO you think you could do that and be a normal cop? Well the prison gaurd job seems the same except multiple times more miserable because you have less freedom. You may even get extremely bored like a security gaurd. Its an extremely hostile and traumatizing environment for every person.

user, I worked with COs in a jail.
1) It will be a decent job with long hours working with the absolute dredges of society. WARNING: Your upper leadership will more than likely have the back of the animals in the jail over yours.
2) Yes and no. We were on a rotating 12 hour shift of four days one week, and three days the following week. There's time, but you MIGHT, depending on the type of person you are, be so mentally drained you won't do much. Believe me, you'll see. All those COs I knew didn't get fat for lack of trying.
3) Yes, but there are hug a thug cops and COs, and like I said your leadership might not have your back. Be careful.
4) If your coworkers do their fucking job, very low. Now I worked in a county jail and shit did happen from time to time. On the other hand, if you're going to go work in the DoC and prison, very high. I'm told the animals run the zoos there, especially if it's a privately ran prison.

I've done state prison time and numerous multi-month stays in various county jails. You are going to wind up as the object of ridicule from both other COs and inmates and be physically challenged. You will be a target because of your age and inexperience.
There is a very thin line between inmates and most guards as the personalities, egos, and attitudes are nearly alike.
Enlist in an armed service and get some real world rough experience under your belt before venturing into that fucking jungle. If you won't follow this advice then at very least get into a well financed white majority county or city - no state facilities.

If you're in anything other than max security prison, you should be fine. Just don't get lazy or complacent and don't forget to always follow procedures. Procedures are in place because someone got killed/injured. Always look inmates in the eye. It's okay to get chummy with prisoners, but don't ever let shit slide cuz you made a pal.

I work at a small corporate run store, where 60% of the population is black (I'm fucking white btw) and every day its the same shit with nigger kids. No ID's for beer/cigar/cigarettes/wraps. Kids trying to steal beer, "Fuck the laws mang". Every week we have to call the police cuz some nigger junkie getting high in bathrooms.
