Explain this to me as a former atheist.
If religion is so pointless, why did we even develop it?
Why does every society all over the globe, from the first to the third world, develop a religion, spirituality, or a set of beliefs that attempt to transcend human nature to provide moral guidance?
Could it be that religion serves a social, or even evolutionary purpose?

As humans we don't know what our purpose is nor the purpose of life itself and some people are so bothered by that and stupid to come up with a worldy goal that they make a fantasy of a painless and perfect life.
Or you can say religion was developed out of the natural hierarchy system. The rich lived luxuriously while most people were poor and sad. The poor created an antidote for their suffering by fabricating an excuse or a reason for their suffering.
Just people trying to explain things they didnt understand by assuming a higher power mustve been at work and setting up customs and rules they believed would somehow affect that higher power favorably or not. The shared beliefs do create bonds among people and strenghten communities, however. Bonds white countries are sorely lacking since atheism became common

When Marx said "Religion is the opiate of the people", he meant not that religion is addictive or a blight on the population, but moreso a form of relief against the oppression of a malevolent upper-class elite. Religion to the common man serves as multiple things. It provides purpose through the fulfillment of religious dogma. It provides comfort through the promises of an afterlife or salvation. It provides enough so that the common man can slog through a day of work.
Today, as wages rise and workers gain more rights, we see a constant drop in religiosity all throughout the developed, and sometimes undeveloped, world. Could it be that Marx was right in this regard? It's possible. It's shaping up to be that way.
