It took 20 minutes to load a picture of Jennifer Aniston

I miss that noise

salty milk and bitcoins

fpbp, that fucking noise

Pretty cool. Used a 33kbps dial up modem.. had to set all kinds of config settings to connect to the ISP. All webpages had gray backgrounds with the occasional gif images in them. 0 girls on the internet and I mean 0. Yahoo chat was around and they didn't ban pedo rooms back then, discussion on the internet was civil and respectul, porn started to show up and it was the most amazing thing to have it available at any time. Good days.

>tfw you had dial-up internet up untill 2009 because you live in buttfuck nowhere Canada
ama

Stupid dial up waiting for fkn connection took forever! I used to love netscape!!!

Slower, fewer graphics/photos/videos.

Utter shit compared to BBS

>playing Ultima Online
>about to get pk’d but still hanging on
>goodbye.wav
Every time

At one point the entire internet was like Sup Forums, except without all the rules.

It came in the mail on a CD and most normies were confused and frightened by it. Free porn and music came from WinMX and Kazzaa. Everybody have a Goecities or Angelfire page with annoying animated things dancing all the fuck over the place.

There was this thing called etiquette that disappeared soon after the internet age commenced - not only in the virtual world but the physical realm as well. The ability to find like-minded people was once a gift, now it enables vulnerable youths to find echo-chamber hug boxes and convince themselves they are *insert fetish/sexuality/gender* at a remarkably young age. Computers were the best for playing Doom, Wolfenstein, Hugo, and eventually Nanosaur.

And it loaded one line at a time :D

pic related, pretty much.
the internet was much slower but the content and the company was much better.

The best days for the internet was before conservatives figured out how to use it. I wish right wing retards would just stick to talk radio.

You could turn the noise off

the carnal delights of the children nowadays
when we were neckbeards we'd ping 2000ms
and log into a 2 color bbs
we had to type words, not just click
reading was required
there were no pictures
these kids nowadays are soft as butter

>tfw Brazilian
>tfw same shitty DSL internet speed since 2009

>i used to love Netscape
But why

Are you me? Literally my first memory of the internet

Gay

>Pic
The Macintosh was well before the time of the internet.

You've got mail. Plus a lot of amateurs playing with hacker tools on AOL chat. Porn was strictly photos. Anything went, it really was the wild west. Much less corporatized. It was an Ancaps paradise.

I just used it to look at funny pictures as a kid and play shitty flash games

So nothings really changed in that regard

You had to get your Netscape download going before you went to bed so it might be done by the time you woke up.

cool. 1994 we had high speed networks in Germany , only a few servers ( like ...enough ) almost any uni was linked . we had terabytes of stormtropper stuff , porn and F 35 blueprints

Anybody remember stickdeath? or newgrounds?

People were very open. It was very common to chat with someone in a chatroom about video games or something and they end up telling you their whole life story. A lot of genuine "characters" and weirdos, unlike today with normies and tryhards. There were also a shitton of actual pedos and you always had to block people or lie about your age to avoid them.

I remember back in 1995 or so I found some beastiality pics and some tiny .mpg videos and that was the hottest thing I had ever seen. I knew then that the internet was a great addition to society.

I had fast internet (for the times) so I made money downloading songs on Napster and burning Cds for people in high school.

Lots of trolling people in Christian chat rooms

I think that's a Mac Classic, which was around in the early 1990s and with a modem could very easily get on the Internet.

No fucking Twitter and Facebook. might consider a 56k to get it back

God damn, I loved that game. Wasted years on it.

it was expensive, so you didn't find stupid people

I wish degenerates virtue signalling trash of the earth leafs would go back to non shitposting status, but we can't all have nice things, especially with the faggot libtard carbon taxes in Canada.

Gaming of the early internet was a golden age
>almost no children
>faggot box was also pretty good, also no children
>gamers used to be very cooperative and innovate their own game modes inside of the game, some of which fagtard developers owned by globalsits(EA) have yet to implement in a game.

Downloading porn was done over night, and there was no central service to find it with. And trying to find god porn using yahoo and metacrawler, not easy.

I remember trading single porn pictures in AOL chatrooms. Back in 1995 you would go in a chatroom dedicated to pic trading, find somebody who had whatever fetish or category you wanted, trade email addresses, and send however many pics you agreed on to each other.

Took fucking forever to download the attachments which were only like 75kb .jpeg files.

My friend and I had a few old lady scat porn pics we would troll people with. Good times.

stay up til 2 am to get 24.0 bps Had to dwnld a program to keep the connection so one image on e-mail would dwnld. Yahoo chat for hours. Web cam Pm's looked worse than moon landing vids...great times

you could bluescreen others pc and open their disc tray on aol it was fun

"black chick fucks horse.avi" amiright?

>tfw no modern pcs with old macintosh aesthetic
i really just need something durable and small for the garage

ytmnd and ebaums world were the only 2 good websites

"Get off the internet I need to make a call"

In 1986-87 I was chatting with students at another university in the same state. I can't remember is it was UNIX but there was definitely no GUI.

tfw chatting up hot babes

except alt.binaries, which was so rough it makes this place look like myspace

Nothing in this post is true, it's just another fat Leaf faggot running his fat mouth.

USEnet rocked

Ah, the good old days of Napster. Probably 20% of the music I still have on my computer is from the downloading frenzy in the last few weeks before that got halted.

Our school had internet around 1997 or 1998, can't remember.
I only saw the internet as a source to collect free wall papers and free music from Napster.

It was very painful to download wallpapers and copy them to floppydisk.

Oh yes

member when Runescape first came out?

Also, with dialup, it was the days before always-on internet.

So, no one could make a phone call while you were using the internet, and you always worried about going over your monthly allotted internet minutes

youtube.com/watch?v=CE2PsfeQm-0

>tfw my family got napster banned
harrowing times m8

And hope nobody called in the mean time. We had call waiting at my house and the beep tone from somebody calling would cause the dialup internet to disconnect. Was rage inducing when I was in the middle of a Team Fortress game.

The latency was only like 1 full second in a FPS game back then...

Prodigy was pretty fun to chat with people...then AOL came about and got completely hax'd with "wares" and what not. People used simple software to boot people offline...mass mail, share music...good ol days

A friend of mine in high school got Prodigy in '91 or '92 - that was the first time I'd ever heard of the Internet, although a kid I went to school with had a Commodore 64 with a modem that literally looked like an old rotary phone ... in the same color scheme as the Commodore.

MOM HANG UP THE PHONE IM FUCKING DOWNLOADING A SONG!! THERES ONLY LIKE 20 MINUTES LEFT!!

Always thought this was the Jerky Boys. It isn’t

I remember downloading a high-res picture of Cindy Crawford in a bikini with an impression of a nipple on a 1200 baud modem. Had to leave that fucking thing on overnight. Got up in the morning before school, raced to the computer before my parents, verified the nip was intact, shut it down.

...

what was the site you could get pirated software? Then its started getting its brains hacked out. I also remember getting booterz flooderz? for yahoo chat fuck that was a lifetime ago

I kind of miss discovering new things through the magic of mislabelling

Yeah I remember there was a really easy attachment you could send that would cause their CD drive to open the tray. Freaked people out. I used to send it and tell them I had just hacked their computer. People would get so mad.

Throw. Back.

>mfw I waited like 20 mins to download this via napster and I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever heard.

Just like Chicken McTesticals

Yahoo chat. Usenet groups, BBS sites.
There was an explosion of information, and it was mass chaos. People left and right made websites and talked about things going on in their lives.
For the first time we were all plugged in and could access information about whatever our passions were. The fiction writers found a release and could write whatever they wished. The initial stirrings of conspiracy sites were born and with them the unifying conspiracies that we have now were being laid down.
We didn't know what we were creating at the time. All that we knew was that we wanted to listen to others and to understand ourselves through the experiences of other people. We wanted to look at ourselves and find meaning, but more importantly we wanted to explore. We were chaotic anarchists in our own way. We didn't know if we were doing good or bad, But we knew we had this new medium and we wished to explore and understand it. We wanted to ride the waves of the bits and bauds and we wanted to wash up in a server and explore the data that lay buried within.
We didn't know what we were doing.
And we were better for it.

I've been browsing the net since the early 90's. The changes between then and now are beyond all comparison.

>duckjob wav.

...

back around 2001 i copied msn's chat's HTML code and made my own website with angelfire that allowed me to enter chatrooms with any name i wanted up to 256 characters or so. It was pretty rad when you loaded up the page and it said "user FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK has ended the room"

I can't be the only one who misses IRC

That's funny. It's been close to 30 years, and I still remember the first picture I downloaded from the internet.

This one.

I was in trouble in school and was waiting in the office for the principal. Meanwhile the fat old lady secretary was playing this on speakerphone and freaking out. Some kid left it on voicemail as a prank and she had no fucking idea what it was. She thought it was a bomb threat or something. I was in trouble for something else but she saw me laughing and started asking all these questions about it. I told her it came from ebaumsworld. She had no clue what that was lmao. I think she called the cops.

The internet was totally fine until one thing came along: the smartphone. Even broadband and increasingly dumbed-down version of Windows didn't kill it. The smartphone was the cancer that ruined it all.

Exciting but also a little boring because things were still so limited; a lot of information hadn't made it online yet. Before the Web it was mostly BBSs where you'd play trivia, discuss politics in ASCII characters, that kind of thing. Even back then left-wing assholes would ban you for saying anything remotely contrary to PC dogma

I will never understand why they shut Yahoo Chat down - it was one of my favorite low-fi time diversions for many years.

Played doom over telnet. IRC was legit

kek yup yup remember LohR

My friend and I racked up a 70 dollar bill back when you got charged by the minute looking at star wars fan sites when we were 11 or 12. His dad was maaaaaad.

I remember going on Usenet for the first time and being freaked out that a guy was posting a message from a university in Finland

>salty milk

Vicky was a tattle tale.

it's still used, mainly hackers tho

Ha I used to message random names that looked like females.. with the standard "asl?". Finally over time (like a year) found a few women and got nudes.

we would do prank phone calls on fire and police chat it was a riot

first pic I ever saved.

i ran a Renegade BBS with 28.8 modems.
i upgraded to 56k about one month before someone offered internet locally.
i went from having people on my board at all times to one user once a day in less than a month.
very early internet was like old cell phone plans.
during peek hours it cost this much per minute, after 5pm it cost a little less, after 10 pm it was even less.
i guess aol helped us with the $19.95 a month plan for like 40 hours

It was 'aight. The best part was no regulation of any kind - if you could get online, you could do whatever the fuck you wanted. Usenet was around since forever, and that could get interesting, once the trolls got organized. There were BBSs for pirating software and porn, MUDs for virtual gaming and sex, and the big portals like The Well and Prodigy for "community" shit. IRC for chatting.
Lots of neckbeards tho, and the UNIX beard fuckers. Most people online were nerds, had to be to understand it, know what it was for, and how to use it - this was before every home had a computer.

>>tfw you had dial-up internet up untill 2009 because you live in australia

>Precursor to dub step.

My first was a pic of Demi Moore. Now I feel old
