There's certainly nothing wrong with featuring cute girls in anime. But anyone who believes that anime owes them cute girls is cancer, who is trying to kill the industry. As proof of this, every bad anime in history has been solely about cute girls, whereas every good anime in history has not.

That era has been dead since the 2000's. Live action can do all of those things now. Just look at all the live-action adaptations of manga/old anime that have come out in the past decade. Anime is no longer needed in that department.

Somewhat agreed on the direction of the industry but I don't think you should just assume that anime should be a certain way, it's equivalent to the current state of western critics of films who use the same criteria of evaluation on every single story they come across. Even in what you'd describe as good periods in good periods in anime history, I bet most of it is not made as a challenge, but simply made to get ratings and an audience to cover the cost of production so the staff can feed their families and make money, the only people who care about challenging themselves are those yet to get a paycheck or a name for themselves, or those who are known to be good at their craft enough to justify spending money on their production.

That is indeed the case in Japan where they refer to shows by what their appeal is, like calling a show full of beautiful girls a bishoujo anime. However, most people outside of Japan refer to them with broader genre terms. The fact that that kind of show is the only kind that's referred to in the same style as the Japanese do means that that style of describing a show isn't what they have in mind when saying "moe anime". If you want to get anal about how terms are used in Japan, why don't you also complain about people referring to Japanese cartoons as anime?
