As for why that house, a few reasons, it has nice symmetry, it has a timeless design (it's a box but there's clearly a difference in it's design compared to a box house built today), there isn't a waste of space like a lot of houses (State houses wasted a lot of space, land) and it's in keeping with our history/National character.

There's a difference between ornamentation, ostentation and building an unappealing house. I get what you're saying, and you're right (to a degree) but I suppose I'm in the same mould as John Betjeman in that I believe a house ought to be a home.
My grandparents live in what was built as a State House and it's quite nice. One of the most beautiful houses I've ever seen was this orange little State House round the corner from there's. Everytime we'd go past I'd look at it and think "I'd be quite content to live in there".
It was sold and whomever brought it painted it white completely ruining it's quant character. Was gutted and don't give it a passing thought now.

that's a claim I've heard quite a few colonies say is their own, but in all seriousness New Zealand has a few elements of the old England before the 1950s when England became Americanized, its minor things like in provincial NZ you still get tearooms and not cafes and other little things like that and habits that linger here but are far gone in the UK now
