I think the one situation where a libertarian could support tariffs would be if we were headed for a hyperinflation and we wanted to make our economy very insular ahead of time, because it sure as hell is gonna be insular after the crash. Basically you might be able to soften an inevitable crash. That's the only reason I can see trade restrictions.

They won't bring the desired result. Absolute best-case scenario, China raises the prices of their dumped steel (I won't hold my breath, personally). They'll still have labor standards just slightly above slavery-tier, and even if the steel problem is fixed, that still leaves electronics, plastic crap, and other shit I can't quite name off the top of my head.

A company can only compete in 3 major fields. 1.Price of natural resources, 2.Taxes given away to the government and 3.Costs of Work. Price of natural resources are more or less similar all over the world. You don't want to work for the same money as Chinese people do and your government will not lower the taxes so how are you supposed to be competitive? In a little-noticed SEC filing submitted on February 22, 2018, sec.gov
Icahn disclosed that he systematically sold off nearly 1 million shares of Manitowoc Company Inc. Manitowoc is a “is a leading global manufacturer of cranes and lifting solutions” and, therefore, heavily dependent on steel to make its products.
The filing came just seven days before a White House event where Trump announced his intention to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross publicly released a report on February 16 calling for a 24 percent tariff. But, as the chart in the SEC filing indicates, Icahn started selling his Manitowoc stock on February 12, prior to the public release of that report. Moreover, the sharp drop in steel-related stocks did not occur until Trump announced he would accept the Commerce Department’s recommendations.
