an invasion of an entire nation doesn't take place overnight. all it takes is a threat to launch a barrage of nukes at the attacker and I'm fairly certain that would cause second thoughts. they don't even necessarily have to possess the nukes, just the threat alone may be enough, depends if an invasion means so much to the attackers that they are willing to call the bluff and potentially risk having their homeland obliterated. and Im sure they could mobilise some unit to protect nukes temporarily, either that or along with the nukes they receive from their allies they could also receive a loan of troops to defend and launch them, of course that information wouldn't see the light of day.
