This thread is dedicated to the discussion of creating a European Colony on Mars, not by direct funding, but through the commercial emigration scheme that will eventually come into play. The first Mars Colony is predicted to be established as early as 7 years from now. Very quickly the colony is going to expand, and Elon Musk has made it clear that commercial emigration will come in to play only a few years later. This means the first large influx of settlers over the next 50 years are going to be families who sell their properties on Earth for the ticket. Only people who can afford to move there will be able to. lets face it - a majority european colony on mars is the only way to truly secure the 14 words. >Plan: /mig/ is a new general and a work in progress. feel free to contribute ideas. This is definitely not about abandoning the problems we have here on Earth, we believe that the European peoples are not only strong enough to overcome those problems, but are able to dedicate themselves on multiple fronts, Mars is that other front.

Mars is so hard right now that it verges on the impossible. Look at this picture. This is how much food (just about) that 6 people need.
This basically means that the colonists need to spend all their time on farming or things that support the farming operations. Just the domes them self, much more dome real estate will be devoted to crops than to space for people.
Now what about everything else? The planetary resources like Earth are spread across the planet of Mars. They won't even be able to make electric motors, cause they need so many different materials and rare earths.
The more I think about Mars the worse it gets. Some people say they are going to have to eat algae and crazy things like that. You can't sustain a colony like that.

They can't even make a T-Shirt without farming cotton. Basically Mars will be an Agrarian society for 100+ years until they can't get mines and manufacturing plants across the entire planet. Until that point they are 100% dependent on Earth.
There's probably going have to be some underground organization of white martians that have the positions of power. Once some sort of self sufficiency is achieved we should be able to consolidate the colony, execute the dissidents and expand from there. At least at first, we will have the numerical superiority.

Hyperloops are run via magnets, and we know what magnets do. How will those magnets be powered? Lithium Ion battery banks.
Now, this would not be too bad. Luxury cruise liners built on mars wouldn't be too bad. But here's the kicker. The Boring company has developed inexpensive and economical flamethrowers. Do you know what this means?

Soviets had a theory about Earth being in just the right orbit around the Sun that's able to sustain life. Mars is too far from the Sun. The orbit gets wider with time (or so the theory went), so at some point Venus becomes suitable for life. That's why they mounted Venus flights, not Mars flights. Mars was worthless according to that theory. I don't really have any opinion on this, just posting it here, because I remembered it.
As a side note, Musk looks like a classic snake oil salesman. I would bet money nothing he touches will work post the money grab phase. If he likes Mars, there must be reasons he wouldn't be held accountable if nothing comes out of Mars settlement.
