I don't think there's a simple explanation, but overpopulation is definitely not the reason. Living conditions have been far worse in the past in European cities in that sense. There are so many factors having an effect. Like alienation, vast comforts (lack of necessity to strive for basic comforts), relationship instability, workforce and hence jobs split between men and women (unlike in the past when men would work and most women would be housewives which would've also contributed to relationship stability), automation eating up jobs while the work life paradigm drags many decades if not a century behind (again also taking into account the job market where both sexes compete for the same jobs), easy availability of no-strings-attached sex (in some form including porn) and accompanied dissipation, social engineering and erosion of local identity (multiculturalism) bringing about lack of collective purpose in society, lack of religion, lack of individual purpose (because of loss of some or all of the aforementioned / -implied), medicalization of slight psychological idiosyncracies (and treating "symptoms" with drugs), the idea ordinary lows of life need fixing (flattening), marketing and culture creating unrealistic expectations for life and demoralizing some individuals before they even start, etc. etc. There are many, many more factors, many of them linked to each other.
Also, societal / ideological delusions seem more like the norm than the exception. It's just the form of the delusions changes eventually leading to "what the hell were we/they thinking" realization only for a new zeitgeist to bring in another form of delusion into the collective...
