Most of the contents of Genesis are ment to be taken as metaphors. Genesis has similarities to ancient near east mythology probably because the people who wrote those out originally were intending to directly argue with those mythologies (Marduk didn't create order from chaos, our God did, etc.) One of the things I find most interesting about the overlaps is the difference between God's interaction with Noah at the end of the flood and the sumerian deities' interactions with Utnapishtim at the end of the flood (guy was warned of the flood by a goddess who didn't like the idea of killing all of humanity, the god who planned out the flood didn't find out about this until after the flood ended, flew into a violent rage and almost killed the guy and his family, IIRC).

I basically think that where ever animal like creatures were seen as gods, with human sacrifices they actually worshipped the fallen angels LARPing as gods like the mayans, aztec, sumerian. possibly egypt.
