The characters actually feel well defined, or at least not as 1D as in most of these show. Which is important in genre with no real conflict or plot.
Contrast with Azumanga Daioh, which is somehow beloved here when the characters are defined by the same joke for 20+ episodes (sasaki likes cats! the teacher's a pedophile! kaori's a lesbian!)

They had stereotypical "roles" but they were rendered realistically, e.g. the "genki" is compensating for being insecure. Basically all other genkis are just genki because they're genki. If that makes any sense.

K-ON is okay. Barakamon is great. Aria is wonderful. Rozen Maiden's SoL scenes are great...Acchi Kocchi is kinda cute...Hayate no Gotoku is awesome. Azumanga is nice, as is Nichijou...Gochūmon ha Usagi desuka? is okay...Kinmoza is BRILLIANT...Tamako Market is endearing...Yama no Susume is sweet. Seitokai Yakuindomo is cool ecchi fun...Cromartie High School is off the chain...Mitsudomoe is fucking HILARIOUS...I'll stop here for now.
