The best example of a story that should have just entirely focused on being cute and comfy, with literally all of the serious or "dark" things just getting in the way of any enjoyment.
It's also harder for bad directing to ruin a comfy cute girl show than it is for bad directing to ruin a serious show.

How dare you. The MC from 91 days had actual goals and characterization. He's quiet and shows little emotion because he's intentionally stifling his emotions so his true intentions don't end up showing, and so that he can can observe his surroundings as much as possible to plan out his assassination plot. Kirito is quiet and non-reactive because he simply has no character.
