Also consider that that things like dilithium crystals, which control the reaction in the warp drive core, don't exist, and were a scarce resource in the original series. by TNG times they were able to be replicated. But in much of the federation and outside of it, where replicator technology was not widespread, currency in the form of latinum (which cannot be replicated) was still widely used.
