To elaborate on this, the reason why the monarchy still exists is so that the state retains a method of bypassing the representative government of parliament though the crown. The reason why parliament has outright resisted the drafting of a constitution outlining the powers of the British government is so that the state can expand its powers and restrict the rights of the citizenry as it suites them.

Britain has a "back to the wall" principle of self defense. Essentially if you have ameans to escape, you should. If the law judge you are back to the wall, you can do just about anything up to killing the intruder.
