Despite being well captured and acted I could not enjoy the movie, it was just lefty dark version of Splash. I'm not sure right now if Del Taco tried to force us his political view point or just knew that the modern audience would love the movie only because it breast feeds us Liberalism so it would net him a cheap Oscar. I don't really see your argument. The good people in the movie were mostly white people too. The reason the mute lady was interested in the monster is that she felt a kinship with him as outcasts who are incapable of expressing themselves to others. One could also make the argument that Russian guy being a good gay makes it right-wing propaganda given all the hysteria about Russians these days. Also, wasn't the main bad guy a military guy? He didn't seem to be representative of the entire gov't from what I remember.
Anyways, I disagree with your take on the movie but I still thought the movie was disappointing for other reasons. Mainly, it was just boring, drawn out, kind of predictable, and the sex stuff was kind of weird. I thought the end stuff with her scars was kind of cool though.

One thing I don't get is why anyone is supposed to give a shit about the fish. Del Taco is good at making creepy and entertaining shit but NOT good at sentimentality, social critique or tugging at heartstrings, all of which this movie tries way too hard to do. The movie portrays the fish as a monster; it kills cats, injures the protagonist, and displays all the outward intelligence of a crow, with frightening motions and creepy tics. They tried to stick some glowy bioluminescence onto it to make it prettier but in the end it still looks like a monster from a video game. The connection between the fish and the woman is also nonsensical; the moment she sees it she decides she's attracted to it and wants to set it free and fuck it. One can only assume she's a repressed degenerate of some kind. Her only connection to it comes from the fact that she's mute, and so is the fish. She might as well fuck a horse if that's all it takes to win her over.
And don't get me started on the sheer number of totally pointless takeaway scenes that display some sort of "bigotry" by the people we're evidently not supposed to like, to the point where it feels cheaply tacked on and not at all organic or characteristic. The little random bits of "problematic" behavior by the bad guys actually takes you out of the movie because there's so clearly an agenda behind it. Michael Shannon is absolutely terrible. He knows he's playing a strawman he hates and since he finds no sympathy or immersion in his own character he reduces himself to a cartoon version of what he's supposed to represent, that being toxic masculinity. And Del Toro can't direct him to give a better performance because he likes what he sees, he likes the cartoony creepiness of it, because he's a pleb and a childlike nerd who likes monsters.
I'd say that Toro should stick to making kid's movies about weird funny shit, like Hellboy, but then again I don't what that degenerate anywhere near an underaged audience.
