I've begrudgingly watched 10 episodes and it's hokey, has 0 world building and shallow.

Is there some hidden subtext I'm not getting?

The anime is both pretty unsightly and poorly convey's the manga's story. The sequel manga is basically a gradual and painful downward slope though, so it's difficult to recommend getting invested either way.

You have to read the manga, but be warned, the manga is only for those of the highest IQ. The writing and foreshadowing is extremely subtle and will fly over your head if you don't spend at least 5 minutes analyzing each page.

Well the gore and vore are going to make anyone latch to the show, even despite the Zizek fuck your mom thing.

Someone told me this was a horror anime... it couldn't be further from the truth. There isn't even that much blood, gore and violence and there is no "psychological" horror aspect to it either. Worst thing that happens to MC is him getting tortured in the last episode and finally attacking and eating a guy. It took 12 episodes for something like that to happen.
