Yes, dirt poor. Poor as Poland. Most of the country is beautiful and serene though, so I have few complaints. Cardiff is quite nice, even if it has loads of Chinese students.
Lots do, lots look Mediterranean, others look pretty Germanic. Catherine Zeta-Jones is my favourite type.
Overall I'd say Welsh people either look like Spaniards or Paddies.

My great grandpa was irish, great grandma was austrian-hungarian (basically german I guess?)
the rest of it is like colonial or potato famine era scottish/english/irish/welsh with some 1800s german thrown in, americans have been mutts for like 300+ years

Wales is dirt poor as our economy used to revolve around the mining industry. All of the mines were closed in favour of purchasing resources from foreign countries, and we've been in the shit ever since this de-industrialisation. Our economy is almost entirely dictated by London, which does nothing with its authority but send over useless handouts. I argue that the best thing for us is to become independent and control our own economy and resources. If Ireland can, we can too.
