I can marathon Hidamari Sketch all day and find it amazing, Sora No Woto is the least interesting SoL I’ve ever finished.

The goals can be as simple as painting a new sign for the apartment, or finding a lost cat.

There are 2 types of shows: character centred and and plot centred. Character centred shows tend to have a lot of deep and interesting characters that have a lot interactions with each other. Plus they are not so rushed as plot centred shows. Those 2 factors appeal to people.

Aria does have bigger goal though. It's of heroines growing as undines and as people.

The issue with CGDCT is that while what you say is true, the character's are rarely interesting enough to carry a show.
Sure you can say "but they're cute" but that's pretty much the bare minimum in anime.
There's only so much "generic cute girls going to school and doing cute schoolgirl stuff" people can take.
Look at Girls Last Tour and Kekkai Sensen. Both are character driven SOL but unlike CGDCT shows, they both have interesting settings for the characters to interact in

I personally go for anime which has long arching plot, which likes go dance around whether if the protagonists actually reach their intended goal. Im a fan of struggle anime though so go figure

Well-developed characters you can't help but love, combined with an interesting visual style that draws you in. You don't necessarily need an interesting setting like Aria or Sora no Woto.

SoL can be great, but I feel that there still needs to be SOME type of overarching plot still to keep things moving, even if it's very slowly. Examples like Barakamon, GTO, Hana Iroha, Princess Principal, etc.

I know some faggots here will throw up there hands and scream "THOSE ARE NOT SLICE OF LIFE!!!" just because they have a clear cut beginning and end to a plot. But, if you really watch the shows, the majority of episodes are very self-contained, with a tid-bit of plot sprinkled here and there. It keeps things moving forward, while remaining SoL-ish.

Pure SoL feels like a massive waste of time to most people. To be fair, watching anime in general is a waste of time, but many at least want to feel like they watched "a story" from start to finish.
