You apparently think your experience in Call of Duty games is a perfect substitute for actual experience in combat. Even without ripping through whole magazines at full auto, the construction of a gun makes a huge difference in accuracy, both short range and long range. The size of the round is relatively meaningless in comparison, in fact any round more powerful than standard NATO will overpenetrate people, resulting in relatively small wound channels that can easily be survived if they don't hit anything vital. LMGs and the like are meant for destroying armored vehicles, not infantry.
With assault rifles, one round even close to a vital organ will kill, and the only way to increase their bullet's killing power is to place it more accurately (and, not coincidentally, the only way to make a "safer" model for civilian use is to make it less accurate).
