The quick rundown is as follows.
Facebook's business model is enticing you to post everything about yourself onto their site. To use their site you then forgo all rights to information you post being kept secret. Facebook then sells this information to the highest bidders, chiefly advertisers in order to analyze metadata trends upon which marketing decisions can then be made.
Cambridge Analytica then took the next logical step, and gathered, to quote the Guardian Article
>Kogan “gained access to this information in a legitimate way and through the proper channels”
And use it, to target political adverts at those they deemed most receptive to change their votes. This was done in both the Brexit referendum, and in Trumps election.
The left cannot believe that their Utopian project was not voted for and this is the most legitimate excuse that they've been able to scrounge up, since Trumps election, seeing as Russian hacking is a dud.
Its not illegal to have used this data for this purpose. There was no criminality involved in acquiring this data. It may be an ethical corruption of democracy's purpose, but so is all monetary donations to political parties.
Personally what Cambridge Analytica have done is discover the next weapon in fighting politics. Find the morons most swayable, and aim to win them over to your side, with everyone else relatively entrenched in their own position.
All it will do, is accelerate the collapse, as politics further distances itself from pretending to address peoples problems, and gets caught up in trying to placate a small fraction of the population on the most technical and manipulative ways possible.
