WARSAW, Poland — The Polish Ministry of Defence is considering the purchase of new F-35 Lightning II fighters or a newer version of the F-16 jets to upgrade the country's Air Force, according to Polish Deputy Defence Minister Bartosz Kownacki.
Kownacki told members of the Polish parliamentary defense committee that an earlier plan to acquire used F-16A/B aircraft from an ally was scrapped because of the substantial costs that would be related to upgrading the fighter jets.
"We must think of our further steps because, in addition to our F-16 aircraft, we have Su-22 and MiG-29 aircraft that will be phased out. We must think of our next steps, what should be done in this field in a few years," Kownacki told lawmakers. "I can say that, regarding the F-16 and F-35 aircraft, there is an ongoing discussion on which one to select."
The designed procurement is related to the ministry's plan to replace Poland's Soviet-designed aircraft, such as the country's Sukhoi Su-22 and Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jets, with new aircraft made by a NATO member state. The Polish Air Force operates a fleet of 48 F-16C/D Block 52+ fighters.

Most of the Polish equipment is from Soviet stock or homegrown Polish... or German. For instance the main battle tank is the Leopard 2.
The US stuff includes a few dozen HMMWVs, 30 Tumak 4 trucks, some quads donated by Americans stationed in Germany, 15 M-113 armored troop tanks, a few small UAVs (essentially model airplanes), 48 F-16s and 5 C-130s
Of the 48 Polish navy ships, not one is from the US.

Americans are more reliable partner in anything security related than Germany or France. They have also fucked up their relations with France with that Caracal mess. French pissed off entire Eastern Europe with Mistral deal with Russia. For cancellation of that things were supposed to be made up with Poland buying H225M Caracals. F-35 is still better, EOTS and EODAS are game changers and the internal store capability allows an F-35 to outperform an F-16 with the same stores thanks to the lack of parasitic drag. The F-35 has better control software, it's datalink capability is amazing, and it's a stealth aircraft.
The F-16 is a great plane but the F-35 is simply better.
