It's basically impossible to govern a country where the population is armed, educated, and hates you. Your supplies and infrastructure will be ruined, your leadership will have their families ransomed, your armed forces and police will defect in great numbers and some defectors will remain in their posts. Other countries will get involved to speed the collapse of the government. Tyranny in a a geographicly separate nation with projected force is counterintuitively more tennable.

Yeah I don't know why the anti-gun people make such a strawmen out of the "rebelling against the government if one has too" argument. That part of the argument is at the bottom of reasons you need an armed population, It's important even if it's not realistic. So what does that leave us with? A civil war scenario would be absolutely disastrous for the US government - a death sentence, even. Simply because we have guns. If America gathered up its guns and banned them, the civil war scenario becomes laughable and would be easily squased. But WITH guns? It is a very serious threat indeed. Why else would they want them to be turned in SO badly?

Also tanks are a huge logistical responsibility. These things have a fuel efficiency rated at gallons per mile. If their fuel supply gets harassed then the tanks are good as useless.
Also tanks have poor visibility up close, meaning that they usually have infantry to escort them.
