I blame Confucianism, personally, for all of China's ills. Taiwan managed to reject it sufficiently, despite claiming to uphold it, with the result being a functional liberal Democracy.

But in very few words, Confucianism promotes servile unquestionable adherence to hierarchical norms while simultaneously claiming that one has the DUTY to revolt should those hierarchies fail to fulfill society's needs.
