The industry is being healthily grown through a diverse range of revenue sources, most notably receipts from overseas streaming. Contrary to what you may have heard from other posters around, the amount of money that Japan makes from the Chinese and the West is a lot. And the entire domestic production capacity is booked solid through 2020.

Yes, animators are still (probably) paid like shit. But that's not due to a lack of work, but rather a function of structural power in the anime industry. Which is why Netflix may be a "godsend".

Not Western. Most of the profits from the exports are from China and SEA countries. While there are services like Crunchyroll and Funimation in the West, those don't really turn out profits like China/SEA. Because the real profits, from BDs, merchandise and event tickets and the such are mostly sold (and in demand) in those countries and not really in the West. So anime is pretty much safe from 'superior Western tastes' as you put it. It'll remain as it always has for the foreseeable future.
