My point is its not supposed to make rational sense. It's supposed to break through your normal modes of thinking and force the viewer to actually consider what is real and what isn't.
The ending is just the writer affirming to himself that other people, and therefore connections, are what is real. And the rest doesn't matter. Sappy.
