When the centralized education system in America succeeded in not just lowering out standards of education, but actively dumbed down and indoctrinated the students. Now most people are too daft to get real political discourse and look for entertainment to sneak in political facts they can swap with their "friends" like baseball cards. This gives them the illusion they are "informed" and allow them to be egotistic.
This system now acts as a feedback loop to keep people under-informed, but gives them a sense of self-importance from their knowledge and a sense of belonging from parroting late night quotes to their social circles.

Viewership in the money demo has totally dropped off due to streaming. If you look at Conan, he's gone from Right Wing gut puncher to liberal hack, and you can track is movement as a response to his dailies. Essentially, the only demo left is 'poor minorities', and hating the white man is good filler for them.
Oliver is playing the same schtick to the Bill Mayer crowd, which are the rich left, but in between that gulf, your every day consumer is gone. Oliver's HBO format also isn't as advertiser dependent, and most of his content winds up on Youtube, by design to try to pull in the non-payers.
All in, what you need to realize is that the country is voting far more conservatively, even if that's to be represented by the PA-18 election, which a Conservative Democrat won, is far more to the right as a whole than these late night hosts, who are so far to the left are, because they are targeting small demographics, fighting for an ever shrinking pie.
What this really calls into question, is soft consumer spending, with things like big box sales crushed and apparel sales in the toilet, your bread and butter American money demo is not tuning in to be told what to buy. Youtube's format simply does not work, adpocolipse aside, because content is gone for OnDemand, which means ad's are skipped constantly, as people go with a purpose. Oglivly touches on this about TV advertising, where his best ad buys were during old movie re-runs, instead of 'must see tv'. Youtube is 100% must see viewing.
The future, is probably moderate / conservative youtube personalities doing featured products, as they do it, they will be defended by the corporations using them. Most big companies are ready to cut ties with these left late night hacks, and the first thing they fuck up on, their advertisers should be pressed for boycotts which will finally put them in their grave along with the telegraph.

It became so political because most political news/opinion shows don't get nearly the same ratings as comedy shows. Most people don't have the attention span to sit and listen to old people talk about serious issues for more than a few minutes at a time. (((they))) realized this and decided that the best way to get their (((programming))) out there was to infuse it with late-nite comedy shows. Jon Stewart was one of the first to start having his shows mostly revolve around politics, from there it blew up.

And the major network late night shows were mostly apolitical. That shifted in 2015 as the 2016 campaign season began to gear up. Jon Stewart left The Daily Show, The Colbert Report ended and in a dazzling display of utter stupidity, the Powers That Be decided it was time for the full on Left Wing Onslaught. People who had no idea what "transgender" even was woke up to the news that guys dressed as women could use the women's bathroom and they wondered what in the fuck was going on. And it just got stupider from there. Disconnected Liberal Elites living in their self imposed fart sniffing bubbles doubled down and went full retard while a good portion of the country watched in growing horror. The doubling down included forcing every celebrity who had sucked a dick, taken it up the ass or warmed a casting couch to toe the Party line, which includes all the Late Night hosts. Simply being reasonable and balanced was seen as being a traitor to the cause. One thing to take away from all this is that the celebrities, with very few exceptions, are all paid whores for your amusement. We used to grow actors and entertainers as the same as prostitutes. Hilarity ensues. The big bad eventually captures the heroes, realizes they are just actors from a TV show, and forces Tim Allen's character to tell the gullible aliens the truth. "Explain it, as you would to a child." Tim Allen's character waffles for a moment, then finally says, "We lied. None of it is real. The ship is a model and we were just pretending." That's Hollywood. Every last stinking slimy bit of it. It's all lies told for our amusement and actors are just people who are really good at dressing up and playing pretend.
