Lincoln still saw you as his countrymen, he saw the need that one day we'd have to be able to get along together again. Those anti-southern Elements would not have treated you so well, not after assassinating the President. The war would have ended so much worse for you. There'd have been NO reconstruction. Let's put it this way. Even thought Trump only has a 30% approval rating and a lot of people in his own party in congress don't like him, if a foreign country's agent assassinated him? It'd be a war, a real "fuck the other country in the ass" war. The only way there wouldn't be a war in response for assassinating the POTUS, si if the country who was responsible for the assassination had enough nuclear weapons to ensure MAD with the US so it'd be a lose/lose scenario for us to go to war over it (such as what happened with Kennedy if the Soviets had any involvment, we weren't going to end the world over it, they'd just sweep it under the rug and intensify a proxy war....)
But if Mexico assassinated Trump? Even with his low popularity Mexico would get fucked in the ass over it.
