Obviously, a divided Europe increases America's power. America can play the traditional balance-of-power game, ignoring the fact that it is the real power. And, of course, America acts in itw own interests. It needs Europe to give it respectability from time to time (as in Iraq and Kosova) but in general, what America needs are resource-rich weak states, as are found in the Middle East and Africa.
A United Europe, in concert with China and perhaps India, could become an economic counterweight to America. Becoming a military counterweight, though, would surely be a long ways off.
There are however questions about the future. Many in American foreign policy circles wonder about the dircection that EU foreign policy would take if dominated by the French. America is often criticized for imperial designs and cynical self interest. There are many in the US who wonder whether France hold similar designs that are inconsistent with a unified western world. Do some in Europe not value the advancement of democracy, something that has so benefitted their peoples, as highly as a competition for global influence? Do some advocate a policy of mercantilism and strategic competition that would have Europe pit totalitarian nations against US interests? French and German plans to sell arms to China heighten these suspicions. More than anything, Americans dont want to be abandoned in the struggle to advance liberty in this world. It is very dear to us and it is one of our, as well as our our allies, contribution to this world that will live beyond the period of Americas preeminence.

America wants a buffer zone, both physical and in every other way, between then and Russia. Always has done.
America also wants healthy trade (i.e. Europe buying stuff from the US) because it knows that when Europe stopped buying during WW2 it was not good for the US economy. It needs those 700m EU consumers to keep buying intel laptops and qualcom smartphones.
Finally, America does not want to be seen to act unilaterally in international affairs and always seeks (at least optically) consensus and partnerships. In reality they DGAF and Bolton is at least honest about this. But Europe serves as a strong endorser of whatever fucking thing the US wanted to do anyway and provides a fig leaf of legitimacy.
But the US certainly doesnt want an "equal partner". Just look at the amount of worry they have over china (which is going to dwarf russia on americas radar i the next 50 years).

You are kidding. Geography determines destiny. What has Poland in common with Portugal? Or Cyprus with Finland? Totally different economies, populations, cultures, language, military concerns, stage of development, religions, not to mention history.
This is the problem with the EU project, it takes no account of the fact that these places didnt become separate countries by accident, they grew separate over thousands of years and normally for very good (and still valid) reasons.

The EU is just some European attempt to catch up with the United States and Russia in terms of economy and possibly militarily because none of you can afford expansive warfare on your own anymore. A united Europe can never really work because all of you are so different in beliefs, history, religion, etc. that it'll turn into a mess eventually. The United States are united because each state was populated with our own people, we never allowed indians to be part of the Union, we just told them to move.
