Science doesn't. Statistics do. Over several generations, a small, isolated gene pool will be more susceptible to negative traits. The same would also be true of positive traits, but there's a lot more that can go wrong than right with complex organisms and random chance.

There's nothing wrong with breeding your sister, but it would be harmful to society as a whole if there were an established system of regular inbreeding.
