1 London is built on clay, so a building's height is limited in part by its weight. "Big boned" buildings such as the Empire state, would never have worked here. It would have sunk into the ground. New York is built on rock as you may know.
Grade-A office space price is awarded to buildings with a lot of "outer" office space, and little to no "core" inner space. Nobody wants to have anything other than a window seat, this leads to buildings of the size and shape seen.

It is all about destroying form and challenging traditional standards of architectural beauty and aesthetic.
