This kind of reminded me that Mizushima's Hagaren anime really handled this whole section with Nina much better. By making Ed and Al meet her before the exam, study and live with Tucker and spend much time with this family it really made the conclusion of the tragedy of this sad family much more resonant to both the brother and me as an audience. It's still quite soul-crushing in the manga but the first anime made it utterly devastating.
