It is much easier to kill people with automatic rifle than handguns, so by that logic limiting the access does make sense.
But the thing is, that really wouldn't affect anything. If somebody is dead-set on commiting mass murder in school, they will find means to do it even if the guns are not easily available. They could get AR illegally, make explosives or just drive through the gates when people are leaving the school.
Very small minority of murders in US are done with automatic weapons. It's just very easy, loud thing to target, and limiting handguns or whatever else would be much harder.

This. Ban guns? Someone makes some home made bombs or drives a truck into a bunch of children, same result, lots of dead bodies. Banning guns isn't the solution to stopping children or anyone getting killed, if someone wants to kill you or anyone whilst you're not paying attention, they quite easily do it, even with a rock or any blunt object.

Making it harder to obtain something can't guarantee that nobody every misuses it, but it can lower the rates of misuse. That's the same reason why we ban certain drugs and have a legal drinking/driving age, yes? Achieving a 20+ kill count in a school is much easier with an AR-15; you could do the same with handguns, a bomb, a truck, etc. but it'd be much more difficult to accomplish
