I've always wondered this about those who swear absolute loyalty to foreign companies and brands as well. For example, my friend is absolutely loyal to Honda and Subaru, they can do no wrong in his eyes. He owned a 2001 Chrysler Sebring in college that he abused and intentionally broke things, constantly calling it a piece of shit. Yet he never had to replace a part or take in to a shop, with the exception of tire rotations. Finally after saving up he got a 2013 Honda Accord that he babys. Yet the interior leather is already falling apart and hes already had to replace the alternator.... but to him, domestic is garbage and Japan is "numba 1 quality auto maker". Hes not a weeb, but I've never understood Americans that hate their domestic brands and institutions and just blindly trusted and praise foreign ones.

To me this just seems completely isomorphic to leftist behaviour in general. There was a great post that I didn't pasta but the gist of it was that it's "safer" to like something that isn't associated with your ingroup, because your ingroup have your back anyway and thus being "open minded" would lessen the threat from the outgroup. But I suppose this is simply because we aren't asserting our ingroup culture, thus we aren't a "threat" in the equation at all.
I also guess there's also some sort of hipster obfuscation going on in the sense that if you are into something obscure, you can't really be called out on it because you are the "expert" on the subject so at the worst people are just gonna shake their heads and say that they don't get it. If he had to focus on domestic brands he would have to compete knowledge-wise with actual brand production engineers, manufacturers and mechanics who knows the products inside out. He feel he would be called out on bullshit and so he takes the option with lower resistence (foreign brands).
