It's not so much the single mother in and of itself that's the cause but the overall breakdown of the family as a whole. Before the big push towards suburbanization families used to live in larger, multi-generational communities where they either lived in the same home or lived nearby to one another. These smaller communities allowed for each person to be responsible for one another, where the lessons of the past were passed down from generation to generation and resources were shared ensuring self reliance. Then they started breaking down into nuclear families that would move across the country, and this worked for a while but cracks formed that resulted in the single parent epidemic we have today. Single parent homes that lack the guidance and responsibility inherent in close knit communities and brought forth a reliance on an uncaring and bureaucratic state for support and resources.
