It went through the protestants, puritans, unitarians and then fused itself to the WASP establishment in america, spreading it across the globe post ww2.

A lot of people believe the earth is flat, but I am not seeing any proof. The Catholic clergy had even more pedophilia and other degeneracy back then than they do now, and they refused to change so the only option was to reject the papacy. Luther's initial goal was to reform the Catholic church but it became very quickly apparent that their central leadership was too corrupt to change.
Luther was not perfect-- some of his suggestions were clearly to appeal to the nobility, like saying that a king should be his own country's pope, when the end goal should have been for the church to be independent from the government. Overall though I think the reformation was a good thing and more good came out of it than bad.

Obvisouly the protestants of back then had nothing to do with the portestants today, or even 60 years ago, Martin Luther would be shocked at how lax todays protestants, and all christians for that matter, are today.
But times change and things are connected and there is a very definite trend towards left leaning politics from protestants (catholics were usually reactionaries/monarchists) during the last 500 years, culminating of course in the present day.
