There was plenty of competition in socialist countries. First of all, there was a strong emphasis on sport. Second of all, factories and enterprises frequently competed to see who could produce the most steel, tanks, tractors, etc. Whichever factory workers won the contest received a bonus salary from the state.
If capitalism isn't gotten rid of, your children will almost certainly die either from nuclear war, environmental degradation, social unrest, etc.

Stalin ended starvation in Russia and Ukraine. Before the mechanization of agriculture, famines occurred in Russia every couple of years, killing untold numbers of people.

The North Korean state owns all industry in the country. Fascism does not imply complete state control of industry; on then contrary heavy industrial regulation is typically what you would find in fascist Spain, Italy, or Nazi Germany.

If your state needs to rely on foreign fertilizers to feed its populace you are unfortunately a failed state. Agriculture is basically one of the most basic and fundamental aspects of any economy. If you cannot even meet that crucial demand without importing foreign fertilizers your country is not functioning properly. I'm not necessarily implying that communism is the main issue in that respect (North Korea has been hammered by droughts on a pretty regular basis). However, Venezuela has demonstrated the same issue with overwhelming bureaucracy and lack of economic diversity lead to a severe lack of agriculture.

They already had a developed trade relationship with the USSR, which had plenty of its own fertilizer. They never imagined the USSR would be dismantled from the inside. They never planned for a situation where fertilizer imports would suddenly stop. I agree this was a wrongheaded policy. They should have planned for every kind of scenario. But that's easier said than done. Nobody on this board knows what it's like to really run a country.
