It's hard to know the specifics of what they judged on, because of all these stipulations about anonymity for the accuser, media blackout, presumption of innocence, and on top of what factual information is allowed to filter out, media biases creating impressions more concrete than the evidence itself.
If it was a Judge Judy style shitshow with television cameras and so on there might actually be more "justice" done one way or the other. Because as it stands neither side came out the better of this. The rugby players are now known to be scumbags and widely believed to be criminals, and the girl is now as close to legally being branded slag as you can get, and if she was actually raped, didn't get any convictions.
But if the public could judge on the same experience that the jury did, there'd probably be less ambiguity.
Not that what the public thinks in the end matters.
