He exists to provide some contrast to Guts' party. He's not only one who doesn't suck up to Guts but doesn't buy into his bullshit. Corkus was the bitter realist who became cynical only after getting his dreams crushed and renewed by Griffith. He was comfortable to be under the wing of someone else that was great because he knew he wasn't set out for success on his own. Seeing that Guts was going away after their biggest success, his purpose was to be a individual that could stand with Griffith and finally breaking those ties with the band were all good reasons he never admits. Just like Caska, Guts standing next to Griffith while being under him invalidated his existence.
