actually it made a lot of sense. The author never appeared in public and had a name of Akatsuki Natsume, which is generally (not always) a girls name (actually no matter how you write his name, it's written like a girls name). So you have a reclusive author who never gives public interviews, nor does he have his picture taken anywhere, and you create a void of information.

Into this void steps the Sup Forumsnons here, who at some point in time created a story that he was a she. I was here when it happened. It was in the LN threads for Konosuba, long before the anime was even a thing (yes, Konosuba had LN threads here on Sup Forums, as did the manga). In the LN discussion threads I remember how there was speculation about the gender of the author due to the authors name. It was a nebulous enough of an issue, and after extensive searching no one could find anything about the author online.

So there was a debate as to weather he was a she. I don't recall any particular result from the argument, but some Sup Forumsnons must have been convinced he was a she, and so the next thing you knew, everyone around here started talking about it as if it was fact. It wasn't really surprising that by the time the anime exploded in popularity the online conversation had been polluted by years of rumors and speculations as to the author being female, and what I think the final nail in the coffin was the tumbler/swj level reviews calling the konosuba anime being disgusting and misogynistic.

When those reviews ran, well of course this was on the heels of gamergate, and the reviews were obviously written by ignorant and humorless SWJ. So I suspect certain people fought back against this narrative with the rumor the author was a woman, and managed to convince the whole online community that he was. It was a lazy argument, but it worked.

No in fact I wasn't even fact I didn't even watch the anime when it was airing and only started participating in the threads during S2, that being said, I never for a moment thought the author was female.
